Why do dogs jump up to greet people?

Don’t you hate when your dog jumps on people? It’s embarrassing as well as makes people think you don’t have control of your dog.

Since dogs don’t speak English, there are a couple of theories as to why Fido jumps on your guests.

 1. Dogs are driven by their nose, hence they tend to always gravitate to the strong scent-producing areas on our bodies. Our mouths are one of those places. When dogs jump on people they are actually wanting to get close to the person’s face and mouth so they can get a good whiff of our breath. I know…disgusting huh? It may also explain why the next place they like to sniff is “down under”…”if you know what I mean.” Another place where the scent is strongest.

2. Dogs also jump on your guests because it’s a habit and you have not been consistent in getting their attention to get “off” your guests. Hence, why you need a Sit Means Sit trainer.

3. And finally, some dogs have learned that when they jump up on you they get rewarded by having you pick them up.

Our dogs train us well, don’t they?
