DOG TRAINING WITH A REMOTE COLLAR
There are many different methods of dog training. Some methods include leash and choke collar, leash and pinch collar, clicker, treat training and so on… All are proven and effective methods. However, one of the most controversial methods of training happens to be with the remote collar.
One of the most common conflicts about remote electronic collars happens to be that it is a “shock collar,” used for punishment, which is untrue. Remote collars happen to send a short stimulation, (or “shock”) comparable to a muscle stimulator used at a chiropractor’s office. This is used strictly as a means of communication for our dogs, (providing physical touch). I hear a lot of people ask, “Why would you punish your dog like that?” Or more often say,” Let me put that collar on you and see if you like it!” This to me is just silly. It proves more so, that there are a lot of uneducated people, when it comes to dog training and more so remote collar training. Yes, of course there is an incorrect way to use the remote collar when training, just as there is an incorrect way to use a choke or pinch collar. And yes, I will put the remote collar on my hand and put it to full intensity, would you do the same with a pinch or choke collar?
As stated before, using a remote collar as strictly punitive action or as a deterrent would both be incorrect methods of remote collar training. With any method used for dog training, the first and foremost thing you need to accomplish is to get the dogs attention. Do you want your relationship with your dog to be confrontational? (I think that giving them a good crank on a pinch collar would do just that. Do you?) How long would it take you to build reliability with your dog’s sit, treat or clicker training? With the Sit Means Sit Training System, we can provide a non-confrontational training environment that builds confidence and reliability with our dogs at a very fast pace, under any distraction.
In conclusion, a remote training collar does not make your dog sit, or lay down. It is a tool just as a leash is a tool. YOU are the one that makes your dog sit or lay down. How you accomplish that is up to you. To learn more about remote collar dog training, contact your local Sit Means Sit Dog Trainer. They will be more than happy to provide you with a free demonstration.
Thank you.
