Kristin with “Xanya” doing scentwork training

Kristin Zimmerman and her dog “Xanya”, age 15 months, at search and rescue training. Xanya is in training to be an Urban Distaster Search and Rescue dog and once certified, Xanya and Kristin will be members of Pennsylvania task force 1. A “victim” hides in a tube, which only allows scent to come out one end. The search dog is then sent to find the victim and when does so, barks an alert until the handler arrives and releases the dog. The dog in rewarded by the “victim” with a good game of tug-of-war!

R.V. and Camping Show Atlantic City

On March 14-16, Lisa and Kristin had a booth at the R.V. and Camping show in Atlantic City NJ. There’s nothing better than being able to take a vacation and bring your dog with you-except if they’re ill behaved! That’s where Sit Means Sit comes in, helping to transform your dog into a well behaved and beloved travel companion. Below are some pictures from the weekend:

Dog Parks in Southern New Jersey

Camden County
1.Pooch Park at Cooper River Park
Location: Cherry Hill-Take Route 70 to Cuthbert Blvd. South and turn left onto North Park Drive. Follow to the end and the Pooch Park will be on the right with a parking lot on the left.
Hours: 6am-10pm
Info: 2 separate runs; 1 for dogs 30lbs and under, the other for dogs over 30lbs
There is some shade, benches, poop bags, water bowls and fountain, and a concrete walkway down the middle of each dog run
This park can be busy, especially on weekends
Make sure you have proof of vaccinations and town license…the park police do patrol this park and check for those things
Children under 12 years old are not allowed in this park b/c of the increased chance of injury
Wheelchair accessible

2.Crows Woods
Location: Haddonfield-Kings Hwy. West, make a Left onto Warwick Rd. and continue approx. 1 mile. Turn Left onto Upland Way and follow under the train bridge. Immediately after you pass under the bridge, make a right at the sign for Crows Woods and continue to the parking lot.
Hours: Sunrise-Sunset
Info: Dense woods with trails marked with tree trunks, sandy walking trails, and a swimming hole
Bring poop bags as there are none in the woods
More of a nature area, this park is much more pleasing to meander in than most dog parks surrounded by chain link fencing

3. John Connolly Park
Location: Voorhees-295 North to exit 32; Turn Right onto Route 561 (Haddonfield Berlin Rd.) for about 3 miles, then turn Left onto Clementon Rd. and follow for about 1.5 miles. Turn Left into the entrance for Connolly Park
Hours: Sunrise-Sunset
Info: 2 separate runs: one for dogs under 35lbs and the other for those over 35lbs
Poop bags, water bowls, benches, and shade trees are found in both runs
No children under 12 are permitted and a valid license is required
While the dog park area is fairly nice, the rest of the park is not at all dog-friendly- dogs are not allowed on the walking trails or anywhere else in the park, regardless of whether or not they’re on a leash

4. Laurel Acres Park
Location: Mount Laurel-Route 38 to Church St. South. Park is on the left at the 5th traffic light. 2nd Entrance on Union Mill Rd. between Academy Blvd. and Elbo La.
Hours: 7am – Dusk
Info: 2 separate runs: one for dogs under 40lbs and the other for those over 40lbs
Late afternoon is extremely busy
Poop bags and a bench available
A concrete walkway in the middle of both runs, which is important since it can get pretty muddy at times
Fenced in with chain link

5. Duke’s Dog Run at Freedom Park
Location: Medford-Is inside Freedom Park at the intersection of Jones Rd. and Union Rd. just off Route 70
Hours: Sunrise-Sunset
Info: This is a the absolute favorite dog park of Kristin and her dogs, who frequent the park at least once a week
2 huge open fields…no fences, just surrounded by thick treeline
Natural stream for the dogs to play in
Some pieces of agility equipment has recently been added to the front field, bought by local pet businesses, that is open to all dogs
There are normally some poop bags at the entrances, but no water or bowls

6. Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area
Location: Cape May-Route 9 south from Cape May Village, make a Left onto Route 626. Cross the bridge and turn Right onto New England Rd. . The road dead-ends at Higbee Beach. Once there, veer Right and follow the sandy road to the parking area.
Hours: Sunrise-Sunset
Info: ½ mile stretch of beach that contains the last remnant of coastal dune forest
This area is managed as a stop-over place for the migration of southern bound birds
Dogs are technically supposed to be on a leash, but as long as your dog will come back when called you will not have a problem
Although it’s a beach, this area is rocky, some come in sturdier shoes than your beach flip flops
There are trash cans and port-a pots, but no poop bags or water, so don’t forget your own
Depending on the winds and tide, the beach can be pretty buggy, so bring insect repellent

Christmas visit from the therapy dogs!

On Christmas eve, some of the certified therapy dogs, along with their handlers, made the annual tip to Virtua Hospital to visit those people who had to be away from home for Christmas. There were many smiling faces when they saw the dogs…I think we made the day of the staff too! Pictured below are those people and dogs who attended the Christmas visit 2007:

Our Dogs

Here are a few links of some of our personal dogs in some pretty awesome videos…

Lisa with her dog Sampson at a Sit Means Sit training seminar that was hosted July 2007.  Lisa had owned Sampson for 4 months at the time of this seminar.

Lisa with Rocky, a certified search and rescue dog.  Training in a Las Vegas dog park.

Kristin’s new dog Xanya during the trainer’s program in Las Vegas.  In the first part of the video, Xanya is 2nd from the left, and at the end does a water retrieve on command to serve as a distraction.  Kristin had Xanya for 5 weeks at the time of this video.
