Thank you again for the opportunity to “Get Bit by a Dog!”

We had a lot of fun with at the Austin Home and Garden show with our dogs and all the people visiting the show this last weekend. We received a very nice message from a participant at the show this weekend and I wanted to share it. Thanks to everyone who came out to see us and we hope you had fun too!

“Wow! What a demonstration! All of you did a wonderful job of presenting, educating and entertaining us! Thank you for a once-in-a-lifetime experience! You made me feel welcomed, wanted and accepted as part of your demonstration. You also made me feel as if I was safe. To do that in such a short period of time is a testament to your skills with the dogs. I quickly saw how they responded to your commands and I knew you were in control. That only comes from training. We were all fortunate enough to see in your 30 minute presentation what I am sure has taken hundreds if not thousands of hours to create. People only spend that much time putting in the efforts when it is truly what they love to do. I saw your passion. The three of you should be proud of what you have created.

Thank you again for the opportunity to ‘Get Bit by a Dog!’

John”

Austin Dog Training Interview Regarding Dog Attacks

Sit Means Sit Austin dog training was interviewed by Fox News this week asking my opinion about if a dog bites a person should that dog always be destroyed. Of course, my answer is no, not always and not in most cases – if the owner will address the problem. Most dogs can be rehabilitated and trained. It is almost never the dogs fault (and by fault I mean they are actually wired wrong). Dogs that bite usually lack socialization and/or direction and training and often bite from fear. It is the owners responsibility to seek out training and protect the public from an aggressive dog (I was actually misquoted on this point in the new segment below). I would prefer that owners seek out a good dog training program, like we have at Sit Means Sit, and address the issue.

It upsets me when I hear people say they want their dog to remain aggressive as a guard dog. There is a huge difference between a guard dog and an aggressive dog. A true guard dog is trained and only guards when it is necessary and when told to do so. An aggressive dog is a dog that is not trained and the owner does not have control of when he is aggressive and when he is not.

Anyway, there are some good shots of my dogs Joson and Jato near the end of this news clip if you are interested…

Dogs Are So Adaptable

I suppose this post will upset some people. I do not mean it to. My observations in this case are not scientific but rather just based on my experience, so I hope you will just take it as an interesting read…

So what? Dogs are adaptable. Why would that upset me?

We take in board and train dogs as part of our training programs here in Austin. We only take in one maybe two dogs at a time because it is not about the boarding but about the training. The dogs we take in for training live with us just like they were one of our personal dogs so they are really a part of our family.

Every time we take in a dog, I am impressed and a little amazed how quickly they adapt to our personal dogs; our [small] house; and our routines. I think we all try to think our dog is our dog and he would be miserable without us. – yes, this is the part that will upset some people- However, my observations show this not to be the case. This upsets me a little too because I would be miserable without my dogs. I believe that over the centuries dogs have learned to adapt to changes in their human’s world. They live in the moment, and if they feel safe, fed, and maybe a little love and/or attention a dog usually adapts very quickly.

This is not to say that dogs don’t get stressed with change. Many do! Especially if the change is too dramatic. An example would be going from an inside dog that is part of the family to going to an outside dog. Or going from getting lots of attention to getting very little. Or going from not sleeping in a crate to being forced into a crate (or going from a crate where he feels safe to going without). But if the change is only in location and human and much of the rest remains similar then most dogs really do take it in stride.

Within one, maybe two nights, the dog has selected their new sleeping place, a sleeping schedule, feeding schedule and accepted and often embraced the hectic life of living with two dog trainers where the hours at the new home and in the car and at parks, etc are different every day. They don’t mope around the house, but rather they usually embrace their training and new playmates and humans and, well, act like dogs! It is too bad some of us are not as comfortable with change and with living in the moment.

On of the things I love about being a dog trainer is I get to learn from dogs every day!

Dog Training Mobile

Picture of Converted Van for Dog Training

"Dog Mobile"

At long last the Sit Means Sit Austin dog training “Dog Mobile” is on the road. We wanted to make sure our dogs and our client’s dogs could travel in style, comfort and safety. The new “Puppy Mobile” includes a redundant 110v air conditioning system to ensure the dogs are nice and cool during the hot Austin summer. It also has a generator to run the air conditioner. Also, the air conditioner can be plugged into any standard outlet. The new Puppy Mobile also has locked down kennels to ensure the dogs on board do not get hurt wandering around and can rest in comfort on foam beds.

Finally, it is important to have fun things to do at group so the Puppy Mobile also carries items to challenge and entertain including jumps, rally course supplies, place boards, lots of water, etc.
