“Sit Means Sit really changed our dog and our lives!”
Fritz is a two year old shepherd. Before Mike he would not listen to my husband or myself. He would jump on people, run around the neighborhood and in kind words be a bad dog. Since training he is the dog we always dreamed of. He listens, doesn’t jump on people and will do anything we ask. Stay, no problem, sit, anywhere we point. It is amazing. My husband and I were almost at witz end with fritz. But now he is by far our dream dog. Mike was fantastic really understood what we wanted from fritz and helped us achieve our goals. My neighbors stopped by only after the first training to tell us how wonderful he was and to make sure it was the same dog. THAT WAS SO WORTH IT. Sit means sit really changed our dog and our lives.

April Client Spotlight of the Month
Rocco is a three year old French Bulldog who lives with his owners in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Michelle, his owner, came to Sit Means Sit Cleveland-Akron in search of obedience and off-leash training for Rocco. After completing a one-week boarding program, here’s what Michelle says about Rocco’s training with Sit Means Sit:“Rocco, my adult French Bulldog, has brought so much joy into my life. However, in the 3 years we have been together, I have been very lax in providing Rocco with any training because of the long hours that I work. It wasn’t until I met my girlfriend, Shaw, that I recognized all the bad behaviors I had tolerated over the years. It finally became clear to both of us that Rocco was running the household and that something needed to change. I found Sit Means Sit through Fox 8′s Hot List as the #1 rated dog training program in the area. I knew I had a real “bulldog” on my hands and I needed to hire the best I could find.
I must say I was a little doubtful that Rocco’s bad habits could be altered and that he could learn any basic commands. But, after the initial consultation with our trainer Jim, he assured me that Rocco could indeed be trained and I purchased the Jumpstart Program. Imagine my surprise when I saw the first video of Rocco sitting off-camera and coming to Jim on command after just a few days. When he came home after a full week of training, Rocco was performing seven new commands and I was easily able to practice and master the program in just a few short hours. Jim was great about answering all questions and assisting with the transition.
Thank you for turning Rocco into a well-behaved member of the family. I can’t wait to bring him to a few of the training classes to reinforce the good behavior and keep Rocco on track. This was the best investment I could have made in my little buddy.”

“We saw results immediately!”
Mike has done an exceptional job training our 5 month old chocolate lab, Buster, or should I say training us on how to train and communicate with our dog. When Mike showed up on our doorstep we were more than ready to have Buster trained to do just the basics. Mike went above and beyond the basics. He taught our kids how to safely approach dogs. He really honed in on specific areas that we were lacking in. We saw results immediately! Now, we actually enjoy taking Buster for walks in the park. It is very obvious that Mike has a love for training dogs. I recommended Mike from Sit Means Sit to everyone I know with a dog after the first day of training.
Thanks Mike for all that you have done!!

Ripley’s Real Transformation
Ripley has been doing very well and I have been pleased with the group classes. However, his real transformation showed up for our first run at Lake Medina on Monday. I ran the 2 miles with him off leash the whole time, releasing to run and recalling instantly with the first command from hundreds of yards away. He PLAYED, yes PLAYED, with a Weimeraner, 2 Boxers and a little mutt along the way with no hair raised along scruff and maybe even a little glee. THIS was my goal with the training and now I cannot wait to test him further with more dogs and people along the way. He is better off leash than on leash now.Thank you thank you thank you!

“Joining the Sit Means Sit program was the best choice we ever made for our dog!”
Joining the Sit Means Sit program was the best choice we ever made for our dog, Desmo. Never would I have imagined he’d have the ability to play the yard with no leash or heel through the neighborhood. His new off leash freedom has made him a much happier dog. Our trainer, Shawn is very talented at what he does and has worked to fit our individual needs into the personalized training. In a few short weeks our dog was transformed from an ornery puppy into an obedient and well trained dog. We would recommend Shawn and the Sit Means Sit program to our friends and family or anyone that loves their dog!

Thank you Ohio, No More Pit Bull “Vicious Dog” Law
We did it! THANKS TO YOU, OHIO NO LONGER DISCRIMINATES BASED ON BREEDToday, I had the pleasure of being at the bill-signing ceremony where Governor Kasich signed HB 14 into law. This historic legislation repeals Ohio’s breed-discriminatory law targeting pit bulls and replaces it with a comprehensive reckless owner/dangerous dog law. Ohio was the only state to codify canine profiling. In the past, all “pit bulls,” as defined by their appearance, were included in the definition of “vicious dogs.” Pet pit bulls and short-haired muscular mutts were often wrongfully taken from loving families and killed because the law unfairly classified all pit bulls as vicious dogs. The new law rectifies this wrong by taking pit bulls out of the definition of vicious dogs and establishing nuisance, dangerous, and vicious dog categories solely based on a dog’s behavior, regardless of breed or appearance. It also prevents convicted felons from owning an unsterilized dog for three years after release from prison.
Thank you for joining Best Friends in spearheading this groundbreaking accomplishment. In the Buckeye state, many dogs are wagging their tail in thanks.Remember, politics is not a spectator sport!YOU ARE WONDERFUL!Sincerely,

How To Communicate With Your Dog
Clear communication is the corner stone for the longevity of any healthy relationship, including the relationship we have with our dogs.
While it can be argued that English is the common language used throughout the world among humans, such is not the case with our dogs. Not only does your dog not speak English, it does not speak any other verbal language either. Therefore, when we bring a new member into our family, the responsibility is on our shoulders to lay the foundation for healthy communication.

The purpose of this short article is to create a paradigm shift of our understanding in how we can best communicate with, and teach our dogs to produce desired results.
To make it simple, consider that our dogs have the capacity to be multi-lingual. The following, but not limited to, can all be considered languages of communication, Body, Verbal, Food, Toy, Collar, Whistle and Leash. To attempt teaching, using all these languages at the same time, sets up confusion not only for the dog, but more importantly, the owner.
At Sit Means Sit Cleveland-Akron, we initiate teaching communication without using any verbal commands. We use our body, integrating our SMS collar and then the leash as needed, to guide and create a desired physical movement. For most, this approach is counter intuitive, since generally folks assume that dogs speaks English, and then they start throwing out commands louder and faster, sending the dog into confusion all while yanking on the leash.
The classic, “yell at the dog until he figures it out,” is the shortest route to confusion and the direct route to inconsistent compliance. This scenario is no different than someone yelling at you in a foreign language. Confusion and frustration show up quickly, followed by fear. This does not set a healthy stage for learning to take place for either you or your dog.
Teaching your dog a skill starts with gaining your dog’s attention. With our Sit Means Sit program there is no yelling, screaming or otherwise “hissy fits” involved to get your dog to learn. We build a line of communication in a planned progressive protocol. The progression is based on each dog’s capacity to demonstrate a level of comprehension to pay attention to the owner. Once the dog understands what is expected to pay attention, then we begin with teaching a defined skill, followed by verbal marking. The initial skill set includes the commands “come” “sit” “place” and “free.” We can teach all these skills without a single word being spoken. Our deaf dog clients are the easiest to grasp this approach.
By refreshing the importance of clear communication, it is our intention to shift your paradigm to the language of mutual understanding, so you can continue to teach your dog new skills. We would like to encourage all of you to check your communication style, and if need be, refresh your approach down to a whisper and go back to Sit Means Sit basics. Go ahead and dust off the place board, pull out the long leash and challenge yourself and your dog, to go through the corner stone drill of Come-Place-Free drill. Then progressively, add duration, distance and distractions, do all this to enhance your relationship and level of communication with your best four legged pal.

Sit Means Sit Cleveland-Akron Client Spotlight of the Month – Stryker & Yago!
Stryker and Yago joined Sit Means Sit Cleveland-Akron in the fall of 2010. They areDoberman Pinschers who live with their family in North Royalton, Ohio. They like treats, running together, and walks in the Metro Parks. Stryker likes his Frisbee and Yago likes his football. Both pups are just fine with any and all treats and love to splash around at Stow’s Bow Wow Beach. Tricks include ”Talk to me”, “Dead-dog”, “Play statue” and if they could talk, they would surely say, ”More treats!” and “Let’s play!”
Here’s what owners, Jim & Sue had to say about Stryker and Yago’s continued training with Sit Means Sit Cleveland-Akron:
“Stryker and Yago are brothers; same parents but different litters. They are six months apart in age. Stryker is our red and first-born. Yago is the black and rust. Both successfully completed puppy-training classes. Several months later as they were matching each other in size, speed, and stubbornness, we noticed Yago was having some frustration-aggressive behavior problems. As luck would have it, we found Sit-Means-Sit at a dog event at Bow-Wow Beach in Stow, Ohio. Chris and Kiya gave us a demonstration and we thought this might be a great thing for Stryker and Yago. We were right!
Group class gives Stryker and Yago a chance to socialize with other dogs, and burn up energy. Dobermans, like a lot of other breeds, are smart dogs. They need to be worked, stimulated and challenged. In group class, the level of distraction is heightened pushing them outside their comfort zone. We have learned training is everyday. We have been attending classes for little over a year. We are amazed at what Stryker and Yago have accomplished. Both achieved Canine Good Citizenship certification following classes and AKC testing offered through Sit-Means-Sit last summer. Sit-Means-Sit training has been positive for our dogs and changed our lives. Training classes give us time to focus on and spend with our boys. It trains us, to train them. Two male Dobermans can be a handful and a half. These guys need the discipline, the structure, and the fun, that we get from Sit-Means-Sit training. They say a home is not a home without a dog. Thanks to Chris, who trained our boys (and us), Jody, Sean, Paul and all the Sit-Means-Sit folks, Stryker and Yago are an enjoyable part of our lives making our house a Home. All the trainers have been very helpful to our boys and us. They assist and help everyone with any training problems or questions that anyone may have. We will miss Chris very much as he leaves for Washington. He was great with our boys, and we have enjoyed training with him. Stryker and Yago give Chris a Big Four Paws up!”
Jim & Sue
Thank you Jim, Sue, Stryker & Yago for being supportive members of the Sit Means Sit family!
