Leash Walking – Before and After Sit Means Sit Dog Training

AUGUST 10, 2013 By

Does your dog walk well on a leash or does your dog take you on a walk? I’ve never had a dog that walked well on a lease, they always pulled in the direction they wanted to go. This was the case with our puppy, Roxy as well. We did what we knew, which wasn’t much, but she still pulled, tugged, and made all of us dread taking her for a walk. Normally, I’d let my husband walk her because it hurt my back to have her tug me the entire way. And there was no way my kids could walk her.

We were excited to have Sit Means Sit of Cleveland Akron train Roxy in exchange for our honest feedback through a series of posts. We enrolled Roxy in the week long boarding & training program at Sit Means Sit this past Spring.  We can’t believe the difference it made in our lives.

I had no control. She was in complete control. My husband is a lot stronger than me and he even had a difficult time keeping her in line, while she pulled him as well.

He has a little more control but she is pulling the leash hard while choking herself. This is not how walking a dog on a leash is suppose to look.

Sit Means Sit Cleveland-Akron trains more than 40 dogs a month to become happy, obedient dogs.  They have been voted #1 for years for Best Dog Training by Fox 8 Hot List and Akron Beacon’s Best.

I wasn’t sure what to expect since I’ve never had a trained dog before. When Paul came out for our Free in-home demo and evaluation, I was surprised at how well Roxy responded. That being said, I was still skeptical that she could become a well-trained dog, especially when it came to leash walking. I thought maybe she could be trained to follow the trainers instructions but not mine and definitely not my kids. We dropped her off and hoped for the best!

The kennels are very big for the dogs while not being trained. I was impressed and comforted by this. There was plenty of room for Roxy to hang out with her toys and even for her large bed.

Roxy was at training for about a week, we missed her so much. I have to confess that I was a little worried about our baby puppy.  The trainers sent us pictures and video clips of her progress every few days, which put our minds at rest. She was having a great time and progressing very quickly!

We were SO EXCITED!!! She was already responding to the training and doing a fantastic job. We couldn’t wait to see her. After a week, we picked up our beloved puppy. All my concerns were put to rest when I saw how well behaved she was and that she was still our fun-loving puppy! I can’t tell you how amazing it was to bring home a puppy that obeyed our commands of sit, come, place, lie down, and heel.

I still can’t believe the difference and it’s been several months. One concern I had was that walks wouldn’t be enjoyable for Roxy if she had to heel right next to us. However, we can control how short or long we make the lease and heeling. Taking walks is now enjoyable for all of us. She can walk next to us and we can’t let her explore when we give her the “go play” command. The best part is knowing she will come back and heel when we command her.

Before Sit Means Sit, my kids could never, ever, ever walk Roxy. Now, they both can! Roxy is a bigger part of the family after her training. My kids love taking her for walks.

Roxy and Elijah are buds,? Although Roxy could totally pull the leash from his hands and run like mad, she is now disciplined and obedient. She is a happier puppy for it.

Believe it or not, my 6 year old daughter can walk Roxy too!  Elizabeth use to be timid around Roxy because of her strength, now they are buddies.
