It’s one thing when you walk down the street with a dog that is recognizable.

“Oh, what a cute Lab!”

“What a nice Beagle you have!”

“That’s a shepherd mix, right?”

It’s another thing when you walk down the street with a 140 pound teddy bear that no one has ever seen before. That’s what happens to us daily.

The phrase we hear everyday is, “What kind of dog is THAT?”

Eros

That is Eros, a Leonberger.

The follow up question is usually, “A what?”

And we say, “A Leon-berger.”

“How do you spell that?”

And that’s how you get the title of this post.

Leonbergers have actually been around for almost a century and a half.  We fell in love at first sight, as many people do.   They aren’t tremendously hard workers, but they have a wonderful temperament.  Eros, the dog pictured above, has been a registered Therapy Dog for a couple of years now.

And you can imagine the attention the puppies get.
I personally owe Leonbergers alot.  They were my first dogs.  I didn’t have dogs growing up, but always wanted them.  My first three dogs were all Leonbergers.  George, the pup here, was a dog I bred myself.  His registered name is aptly, Good Life’s Believe in Love at First Sight.
Whatever dog you’re considering adding to your family, make sure it’s a good fit.  If I was a meticulous housekeeper, a Leonberger might not make a good fit.  As you can imagine, they shed ALOT.
A pet is nothing less than a furry family member and deserve to be treated with respect.  A good way to develop mutual respect is through training, which is why I believe in it so strongly.  And while there are alot of ways to train a dog, the Sit Mean Sit method is the only one I know of where I can walk confidently down the street, with three Leonbergers off leash and under control.

In fact, our Leonberger, Willow, who actually accompanied me to Sit Means Sit school in Denver, finished #1 of all Leonbergers in the country in 2009 in the United Kennel Club.  That is largely due to good training.
