The choices in dog food can be overwhelming. There’s food for small dogs and large dogs, thin dogs and fat dogs, couch potatoes and active dogs, and even food specific to a breed (such as Best Breed Dog Food). But, if you want to insure the best nutrition for your dog, choosing dog food from the array of Healthy foods available is the best course.

But what does "healthy" dog food mean? It’s a food that contains the basics, a good source of protein, and adequate fat, fiber and moisture – and then some (see "Up the Ante" below).

To start with, any dog food must meet the safety regulations of the FDA. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (or AAFCO) defines what goes on dog food labels but some feel this is inadequate considering that the AAFCO is not governed and includes people in the pet food industry who benefit from certain guidelines. So, we as dog owners are left largely to ourselves to find a safe and healthy food for our dog.

Teach Your Dog Where to ‘Potty’ in the Yard

Training your dog to eliminate in one area of the yard is a straight forward task, and given the correct approach and a little patience anyone can teach their dog to ‘potty’ in a specific spot.

Step 1: Establish a clear and defined area. This could be a grassy area or more commonly is an area set aside and covered with pea gravel. The area need not be large, but approximately 6 x 6 will work well. If you have more than one dog then resize the area accordingly. Gravel for the area is ideal as it can be easily disinfected using an enzyme product such as Nature’s Miracle….

There’s nothing like a grand fireworks display – the sky literally on fire with magnificent colors. We love them, and we look forward to enjoying them on those special holidays or special occasions, such as New Years and the Fourth of July. And we are all aware of firework safety for people and children, but we sometimes forget that our pets should also be considered.

Fireworks become very hot very quickly. Curious pets can sniff or even attempt to ingest lit fireworks, resulting in severe burns of the face, mouth or even paws. This is most common in the ever-popular sparkler. Even if unlit, ingesting fireworks can be quite dangerous, even lethal. Fireworks contain a variety of agents including potassium nitrate. For their color effect, heavy metals are used such as mercury, antimony, copper, barium, strontium and phosphorus. Ingestion of these products can result in severe illness.
