Today is part 2 of this episode with a dog that is afraid of men, so what else is there to do but bring all the men out. 🙂

So how did you get from the dog not liking men to the guy getting to pet the dog?  I didn't see anything showing what you did to change the dog's trust, it just skipped that part.  I really would like to know because I'm having this problem with my dog.  He's been here over a week and still will not let my dad get near him.  Thanks…

Most dogs will develop trust as part of the training process. Fear is a VERY strong distraction, but a distraction nonetheless. In the case of the little guy in the video, he developed trust in the handler, despite being a stranger simply by the leadership being taught. All dogs crave structure and leadership. When you provide it, they instinctively develop trust (provided nothing negative happens through that leader). In the case of a third-party stranger, this is just another source of distraction. A fearful dog is taught to ignore the distraction. In essence we're distracting the dog from the distraction —using obedience commands.
