Should I Give My Dog Zinc?

You have probably been told to take plenty of vitamins and minerals. But what about your dog?

What is Zinc?

Zinc is a mineral that is important to both you and your dog. In your furry friend, zinc plays a role in enzymes, proteins, and hormones. Additionally, zinc is important for thyroid and immune system function. So, zinc can help protect your pup from sickness and infection. However, it is a trace mineral. This means that the body only needs small amounts.

How Does My Dog Get Zinc?

Your pal gets zinc from natural sources and from having a healthy and balanced diet. The best source of zinc is fresh meat and fish! The best sources of zinc are beef, duck, chicken, salmon, sardines, fish oil, spinach, broccoli, and eggs.

Signs of Zinc Deficiency

Some signs of a zinc deficiency include frequent or recurring infections, slow wound healing, excessive itching, dull coat, or hair loss. If you suspect that your four-legged friend is zinc deficient, talk to your vet about treatment options!

Can I Give My Dog Zinc?

Because dogs do not store zinc, they need nutritious foods to provide a steady supply of the mineral. Additionally, larger breeds are prone to deficiencies of zinc. However, you must be careful to not provide amounts of zinc that could be toxic.  The bottom line is that most dogs do not need a zinc supplement. If they are being fed a nutritious and healthy diet, they should be getting the amount of minerals that they need.

Remember, under normal circumstances, you can keep your pup’s zinc levels in a normal range with a quality and healthy diet. If you suspect a zinc deficiency, talk with your vet. Your veterinarian will recommend ways to increase your furry friend’s zinc levels through diet or possibly supplements. The health of our fur babies is our top priority!
