Let\u2019s start with locations:<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Will your dog be allowed in baby\u2019s room?\u00a0 If not, getting a gate or starting to teach your dog to lay down at the threshold of the room \u00a0would\u00a0be a good start.<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Will your dog still be able to sleep with you?\u00a0 If the dog sleeps in your bed now and that will change, you are going to need to get your dog a new \u201csnazzy\u201d bed and work toward transitioning the dog to this bed.<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Will your dog still be allowed on furniture?\u00a0 This is particularly important depending on if you will be nursing or how high your changing table is.\u00a0 Start a routine early wherever a dog needs a command to get up or has a command to stay off.<\/p>\n

We have talked about some potential issues for your dog and the new baby but let\u2019s be honest\u2026a dog is a dog and he\/she is going to want to investigate the baby – the sights, smells, and may resent the intrusion into his\/her life and schedule.\u00a0 As you bring things home and starting setting up the nursey, let your dog smell the new items.\u00a0 Start using some of the baby products on yourself so the dog starts getting familiar with the smell.\u00a0 Get a CD with baby noises on it so your dog can start to understand the sounds.\u00a0 Use a baby doll to sit in your lap so you can practice a command for \u201cget back\u201d or \u201cgo away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Life with a baby changes almost every facet of your life and will change your pet\u2019s life too.\u00a0 Start making some changes to your pet\u2019s life during pregnancy – feeding times, play times, and new commands are all going to be part of the process.\u00a0 Think about ways to decrease stress for you and your pet in advance.\u00a0 If you need help, contact a trainer as they can make this time a lot easier by helping create a new bond between you and your dog which will make the transition a little easier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
