Tips for Canoeing & Kayaking with Dogs
Have you considered taking your dog with you the next time you venture out on your canoe or kayak? We have some tips to make sure your time on the water is enjoyable for you and your dog!
Before you head out consider if you and your dog are ready:
- Does your dog enjoy car rides? In most cases a dog that is happy to ride in the car will be happy to ride along on a canoe or kayak.
- Is your canoe or kayak stable with the added weight? Aluminum isn’t a good call because it can be noisy and get to be too hot for your dog.
- Do you have a cover to put on your floor for your dog? Foam grips like this dog paddle board traction pad can be good for kayaks, while an outdoor carpet is a good fit to use on canoes.
- Are you comfortable and confident with paddling? We suggest starting at a place that is quiet and won’t offer too many waves or distractions.
Things to Keep in mind while you’re on the water:
- Make sure that your dog is always wearing a lifejacket.
- Even if your dog is a confident swimmer, it is important to have them wear a life jacket for their safety.
- Keep your dog and boat under control.
- Give yourself plenty of space from other boaters.
- Practice good etiquette by preventing barking.
- Keep control while entering and exiting the boat.
- Dog Leash
- Keep your dog on a short leash while entering and exiting the boat.
- Never leash your dog to the boat!
- Provide your dog with plenty of drinking water.
- Pack your dog first aid kit for emergencies!
- Get your dog acclimated by starting with short trips and build up experience.
The most important thing to remember is to make sure that you and your dog are both having a fun time and staying safe!
