The exact cause of pseudopregnancy is unknown. However, we do know that after a heat cycle, a female dog’s ovaries begin to produce hormones to prepare for pregnancy. Then, if pregnancy does not occur, these hormone levels decrease. But, this decrease can sometimes signal the mammary glands to develop and cause other symptoms of a false pregnancy.

Mild cases of pseudopregnancy will resolve themselves in 2-3 weeks. However, if your companion is experiencing physical symptoms including vomiting and decreased appetite, other treatments can be taken. For example, antiemetics can decrease these symptoms and reduce mammary discharge. Additionally, your vet may also recommend warm or cold compress on the mammary glands. This will decrease inflammation and minimize some of the effects and symptoms of the body. However, very rarely is hormonal treatment needed.

The best way to prevent pseudopregnancy is with a spay surgery. This surgery should be performed after all symptoms have resolved. This will ensure that the false pregnancy symptoms do not continue after and as a result of the surgery.
