Just like their human
counterparts, dogs enjoy Vitamin D just as much!
Not only does it produce pleasant feelings, but it also has actual health benefits for your
furry friend!

Why Furry Friends Enjoy Lounging in the Sun

Dogs enjoy the sunshine just as much as we do! Feeling the warmth on our skin is not only a
serotonin boost but also those essential vitamins. My dog migrates throughout the house
during the day depending on where the prime sun is. I also have a friend who has an eleven-year-old blind English Bulldog, and he navigates his days by knowing where and when the sun comes through the
glass doors.

Benefits of Vitamin D for Dogs

Vitamin D is essential for dogs, as it aids in joint and bone health. Exposure to raw sunlight
is incredibly beneficial for your pooch’s metabolism, circadian rhythm, and hormonal
systems. Vitamin D absorbed into the body leads to the production of melatonin which is
the most important hormone for sleep. Unless you want a nice 5 am alarm clock nudging at
your arm, I would suggest letting them get some sunlight at dinner the night before.

Risks of Too Much Sun

According to the American Kennel Club, there can be certain risks associated with leaving
your dog in the sun for too long. Dogs are, just like humans, at risk for sunburn and certain
types of skin cancer. Because of this, AKC recommends that hairless breeds, white or thin
coats, and light-pigmented features are in need of either dog sunscreen or sun-protective
clothing. The easiest way to avoid these issues is to limit harsh direct sun exposure, just as
you would with a child. The most drastic concern of sun exposure is the risk of heatstroke.
To avoid these pains, make sure to follow these measures: always have water on hand, limit
direct sun exposure to an hour or two, and look for optimal shade for you and your furry
friends!

Have you ever wondered why dogs gravitate towards sunlight?
