Should you adopt a dog or buy one from a breeder? This is typically the first question asked before committing to a new four-legged family member. Here at Sit Means Sit, we want to encourage pet lovers everywhere to adopt. According to the ASPCA<\/a>, 7.6 million animals enter shelters nationwide and 2.7 million of them are put to death each year. This is an overwhelming amount. We want to get you on board to help us save as many lives as possible. There are several myths about dogs that come from shelters. Check out the reasons why adopting is better and let us squash some of those misconceptions.<\/p>\n

The media has had a lot to do with the rumors spread about sheltered dogs. For example, popular comedian Bill Burr says, \u201cI don\u2019t want a dog that freaks out every time I use the toaster.\u201d<\/p>\n

People assume that dogs are brought to animal shelters because they were aggressive or they had some sort of behavioral\/emotional issue. The reality is that dogs are typically given up because the owners HAVE to let them go not because they want too. The owners were simply not prepared to take care of them, they can\u2019t afford them, or they have to move to a place that doesn\u2019t allow pets. When you rescue a dog they are more appreciative and thankful than ever. They are healthy and excited to be apart of their new family.<\/p>\n

Diseases<\/h3>\n

Dog’s from shelters may have diseases but the most common one is kennel cough which is easily treated. Animal shelters make sure that your new companion is flea and worms free. Most of them will even provide you with one free visit to the veterinarian.<\/p>\n

Purebred<\/h3>\n

There is really no reason to desire a purebred dog unless you are planning on putting them in professional shows. Did you know behavioral problems are more common in purebreds? Mixed breeds are more unique and you don’t have to worry with issues like separation anxiety in German Shepherds or destructiveness in Retrievers.<\/p>\n

Age<\/h3>\n

Although many people want to raise their dog from the beginning, there are advantages to buying an older dog. For example, you won’t have to spend as much time training them because their previous owner may have\u00a0already house broken them. They will have already matured and they are use to being left alone. This is good for people with busy schedules.<\/p>\n
