Unfortunately, the same goes for many pet owners and veterinary visits. Sticking to a regular routine with vet check-ups is a very important responsibility for dog moms and dads. At Sit Means Sit South Denver, this is something we regularly remind our Lakewood dog training clients. Because dogs age so much faster than us, skipping even one annual appointment is the equivalent of not seeing your doctor for years. This is why we’re devoting today’s post to the importance of regular vet appointments.

Because the recommendations for frequency of veterinary appointments varies based upon age, let’s take a closer look at the stages of your pup’s life.

Puppydom

During puppydom, it might seem like you’re taking your pup to the vet all the time. For the first 16 weeks of your dog’s life, they will need to see the vet every 3-4 weeks. This is a crucial time in their development and their vaccine schedule. Once you have reached the 16-week mark, make an appointment for a 6 month check-up. At this time, your vet will examine your pup’s overall health and address any potential health concerns.

Adult Dogs

Once your pup has reached the 1-year mark, they are entering into their adult years. On average, adulthood lasts from year 1 to 7, though this varies with some breeds. During adulthood, your dog should see the vet annually. At their first year visit, your dog will likely receive a rabies booster and a distemper-parvo shot. During future appointments your vet will ensure your pup is up to date with all boosters.

Aging Dogs

Once your pup reaches their later years, you should plan to see the vet every 6 months. This will give your vet the opportunity to screen for potential health problems and provide you the chance to discuss any changes you may notice in eating habits or behaviors.

Regardless of age, it’s extremely important to stick to a regular veterinary schedule. Don’t delay, advocate your dog’s health and schedule your next appointment at the vet today!

Sit Means Sit Lakewood Dog Training

At Sit Means Sit South Denver, your dog’s health and happiness is our top priority.
