If you have recently begun to notice your pup displaying less enthusiasm for active play, it’s important to help them get back into the routine of activity. At Sit Means Sit South Denver, we proudly offer dog training from Englewood to Highlands Ranch. We not only coach our clients on how to raise happy, confident and obedient dogs but we advocate for the health of the pups in our program. This is why we’re devoting today’s post to keeping your dog active.

Feed Their Brain

Before we dive into tips or increasing your pup’s active play, we first want to underscore why it’s so important. Sure, we all know that activity is good for the body, but the benefits go far beyond the physical. When running, playing and interacting, your dog’s brain is being stimulated. This type of activity helps to keep them sharp and strengthen your bond. So, no more excuses, it’s time to have some fun and maybe break a sweat in the process!

Toys

Having toys on hand that your pup likes is a great place to start. Not sure which toys your dog prefers? Go to your local pet store and pic an assortment. From balls to ropes to frisbees, you have lots to choose from. Introduce them individually, at different playtimes. Observe your dog’s behavior, which seems to stimulate them the most? Once your pup’s mannerisms have spoken, you will have a clear understanding of their preferences.

Keep Toys for Playtime

Now that you have discovered your dog’s favorite toy(s) it’s important to reserve them for active play. If left out all the time, your pup is less likely to get exciting when you introduce them at playtime. Instead reserve your active play toys for your daily free play.

Change Things Up

Even if your dog has a favorite toy that he or she could play with for hours, it’s important to change things up every once in a while. Remember, you’re trying to stimulate their body and their brain. If they chase the same tennis ball every day, they’re not being challenged. While you should not completely remove the tennis ball from active play, change it up a couple of times a week. If your dog needs to get back into shape read this article.

Ditch the Toys

Sometimes it’s a good idea to put all the toys away and simply play together. Go on a run, play in yard, give your pup the love and attention he or she craves. This will be immensely beneficial to you both!

Sit Means Sit Lakewood Dog Training

If you are interested in learning how our one-on-one and group Englewood dog training classes can help you and your pup grow together, we encourage you to contact us today.
