"paws"Protecting your pup’s paw can be a year-round concern. As leading providers of Little dog training, we help our customers train and care for the fur babies throughout the year. In the heat of the summer, hot pavement can scorch your dog’s paws, while winter weather and salt on the sidewalks can cause chapping. This is why we’re devoting today’s post to tips for protecting your pooch’s paws.

Summer Care

As a good rule of thumb, you should not take your pup out for walks on pavement you cannot comfortably walk on with bare feet. In the hottest parts of the summer, it’s best to walk your pup early in the morning or later in the evening. If your schedule does not allow for late or early walks, be sure to pick shaded areas with plenty of grass. Keep an eye on your pup’s paws this time of year, if you notice a burn or abrasion, wash it regularly and keep it protected with a bandage. If you are looking for booties we have a guide to the best dog booties.

Winter Care

Colorado winter conditions are prime for skin chapping. Just as you take extra care of your skin during the winter, do the same for your pup. Keep in mind that sidewalks and streets are often covered with salt and other deicing compounds. Try to keep your dog away from these products and wash their paws carefully when you return home. This will protect your pup from further damage to their paws and ensure that deicer does not get tracked into your home.

Manicures

Having your pup’s claws cut regularly is important to the health of their paws. If you feel comfortable doing it at home, be sure to stay on top of it. If you prefer to take your pup to the vet or groomer, be sure to treat them to a manicure with each visit.

Cracked Pads

Dry or cracked pads are the sign of neglected paws. Be sure to check your pup’s paws regularly. If they are dry or cracked, consider using Vaseline to give them some much needed moisture. Be sure to also talk to your vet about recommended topical treatments. Massage your pup’s pads gently as you apply, this will help to ensure maximum absorption.

Injured Pads

It is not uncommon for a dog to injure a paw while playing in the yard or out for a walk. If you notice your pup limping or favoring certain paws, check for signs of skin abrasion. If you find that your dog’s pad is injured, clean it thoroughly with antibacterial soap and apply antiseptic ointment. Finally, cover the abrasion with gauze and bandaging. If the abrasion is deep, or your pet does not want to cooperate, it’s time for a visit to the vet.
