But most pups usually tire quickly as they can sleep 18-20 hours a day. You may notice your pup seems to be a swirling tornado one minute, then the next they’ve crashed and have fallen right asleep. This is completely normal!

Sleep is key to developing growth and brains, in both humans and dogs, that’s why babies and puppies are so similar. It helps puppies develop their nervous, immune, and muscular systems, as well as their brains!

New puppies are extremely playful, taking in the world around them. They burn lots of energy, and quickly when discovering new aspects of their life! With so much stimulation going on, they don’t always listen to their internal clocks when it comes to resting, so here’s how to get your pup to schedule some sleeping time:

Getting Your Puppy to Sleep in the Daytime

Leave them alone. Disturbing your puppy will just interrupt their sleep cycle and make them think it’s time to play instead of what they’re supposed to be doing– sleeping.

Give them a place to sleep during the day. Encourage them to sleep in a bed or crate for their daytime naps so they understand that is a dedicated place for sleep.

Create a schedule. Plan your pup’s active time before their sleeping time so they begin to develop a structured routine.

Getting Your Puppy to Sleep in the Nighttime

Create a comfy crate. Getting your pup a comfortable and safe place to sleep is important for welcoming them to sleeping on a schedule. When they go into their crate they’ll know it’s naptime.

Have a bedtime routine set. Creating a bedtime routine will teach your pup about when is the right time to go hit the hay, and stay asleep! Playing before bedtime will wear your pup out and they’ll be tired enough for hours of sleep.

Account for interruptions. Similar to babies, puppies need to potty, play, or have affection in the middle of the night. Don’t get upset with them, instead calmly take your pup out, praise them for letting you know and then put them back to bed.

Creating a Schedule

Puppies do great with routines once they’re set.

Feed your pup at a consistent time everyday, then take them out after eating. Use the time after this to play, walk, and socialize.

Your puppy should take their naps after playing and eating. It’s also a good idea to take them out to the bathroom after waking up.

Puppies can be a large commitment, so be sure you’re ready to be on their schedule. But bonding with your dog as they grow up is like nothing else, enjoy the time you have with them and create a life-long friend!

Not only is your puppy a bundle of joy, but they’re also probably bursting with energy.
