Outdoor Flea Prevention
Keeping fleas out of your home starts with keeping them out of your yard. We recommend regularly maintaining your yard by mowing the lawn, watering plants, and trimming down bushes and trees. Try applying agricultural lime to moist and grassy areas to prevent fleas from gathering. You can also put down black plastic in dry and sandy areas. This will increase heat and deter flies from gathering in those areas. These steps will greatly decrease the presence of fleas in your yard and therefore, in your dog!
Homemade Flea Powder
Not too keen on spending extra money on flea powder? We totally get it. You can use salt or borax to get fleas out of your carpet. Simply sprinkle the salt or borax onto your carpet and vacuum it up over the next few days. The difference will be almost immediately noticeable!
Flea Spray
Flea repellent spray is another easy way to prevent fleas from gathering in your home without making a dent in your wallet. Steep thinly slices lemons and sprigs of fresh rosemary overnight in near-boiling water. You can even add a few drops of geranium essential oil for good measure. Then, simply spritz your mixture on soft furniture, bedding, and your dog. This will instantly repel fleas!
Flea Traps
It may seem tough to substitute household items for a store-bought flea trap, but we assure you it can be done! Simply place some water into a shallow dish. Add a bit of dish soap and a heat or light source, such as a candle or a light suspended above the dish. Leave this mini traps in infested areas overnight and take dump them in the morning. Fleas will be attracted to the warm light, but your soapy water will drown them. A simple and clean solution to flea infestations!
Essential Oils
Turns out essential oils have more uses than calming us down. They also work well to clean our homes and fragrance them to keep fleas away. Scents like citronella, rosemary, cedar, peppermint, lavender, and lemongrass are all great for preventing flea infestations. Try adding the oils to laundry treatments, home fragrance sprays, or vacuum bags.
