Fun Things to Do With Your Dog in the Snow
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t still have fun with your canine companion by your side. Try these fun snowy activities with your pup, and enjoy the winter weather!
Try Sledding or Skijoring
If you enjoy skiing and your pup loves to run, then skijoring might be your next favorite activity to do together. Skijoring is cross-country skiing with a bit of help from your canine companion. It’s simple; all you need is your dog and a pair of skis. Start by getting on the skis and have your pooch run out in front of you with a long line that connects to you as well as Fido’s harness. It may sound far-fetched, but the pulling part actually comes naturally to most pups. It might even surprise you how fun this can be. You can also swap out the skis for a sled or even have Fido hop on the sled with you!
Build a Snowman or Have a Snowball Fight
Building snowmen and having snowball fights are classic winter activities that never seem to get old. Most four-legged friends love chasing snowballs; just be sure you don’t hit them too hard. Gently toss them to your pooch so they can get used to the cold ball of snow. Then try throwing the ball up in the air for your pup to catch! You can also try building a snowman, but we can’t promise that your furry friend won’t see it as a giant snowball challenge.
Go Hiking or Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is a very popular activity for many, and if you love hiking out in the snow, then consider bringing Fido along. Your canine companion loves new sights and smells, so a snowy hike can be lots of fun for them. On a pet-friendly trail, you can go snowshoeing with your four-legged friend and spend time bonding and getting in shape in the beautiful winter weather.
Practice Your Pup’s Nose Work
Nose work is a great way to provide your pooch with mental and physical stimulation. The snow can be a fun addition since this activity is challenging your canine’s ability to use their sniffer to locate specific scents. If you’ve never done nose work or haven’t practiced it with your pooch in a while, consider practicing a bit indoors at first. Then you can work your way outside to hiding toys and treats in the snow for them to find with only the help of their snout.
Don’t forget to be safe in this winter weather, preparing your pooch with sweaters, coats, booties, and paw balm if needed. Also, be sure to know your furry friend’s limits, taking them inside to warmth when they need it and drying them off when they come in.
