A dog is everyone’s best friend. Unfortunately, some of us can’t have all types of dogs in our home. Allergies can be a frustrating and upsetting deterrent from adding a pup to your family. Luckily, you’re not alone and there are plenty of breeds that are options for those of us who are allergic. As much as 10% of people in the U.S. are allergic to dogs. There are plenty of dogs that are great for people who have allergies, although no dog is 100% hypoallergenic. Dogs that don’t shed and have a more predictable coat are a better fit for allergic folks because there is less dander. Dander is what causes most pet allergies, which is attached to pet hair. When it sheds off our dogs, the dander gets into our environment. Have no fear – there are still many dogs that would love to be in your home and that are better for you. 

Great Family Hypoallergenic Breeds

Here are some breeds that are great with children and would make a great addition to a home with a dog-allergic family member. 

  • American Hairless Terrier – Great breed for city livers because they are low maintenance when it comes to exercise. 
  • Chinese Crested – Alert and playful, they are great with gentle children and love human companions. 
  • Coton de Tulear – This breed is small and gets along with any other dogs in your family and love children. However, they also need daily grooming. 
  • Giant Schnauzer – These dogs are very territorial and intelligent, which allows them to be protective of their family. They love exercise and need frequent grooming.
  • Standard Schnauzer – Because of their fondness of children, these pups are an awesome family dog. They do need to be brushed often.  
  • Miniature Schnauzer – These pubs are protective, smart, and adapt to different environments well.
  • Irish Water Spaniel – These active and energetic dogs needs regular exercise and their coat needs to be brushed every 2 weeks. 
  • Maltese – Playful and brave, these pubs make a perfect pup for a family. 

Active Hypoallergenic Breeds

  • Portuguese Water Dog – This athletic breed is loyal, intelligent, and athletic, meaning they need frequent exercise, so they’re perfect for an active home. 
  • Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier – Great for city, country, or suburban homes, these joyful terriers are active and love lots of play. 
  • Bichon Frise – These gentle and happy dogs don’t shed, so are perfect for hypoallergenic home. 
  • Poodle – The Poodle comes in a variety of sizes, are smart, and active. They do however need progressional grooming. 
  • Lagotto Romagnolo – These energetic pups need heavy activity, and regular grooming of their coat.  

How To Reduce Allergy Symptoms 

While there are plenty of dogs that will cause less issues with your allergies, there are also steps you can do to cut down on the effects of the dander. 

  • Wash the pets bedding regularly and clean any couches/chairs your dog spends time on. 
  • Change air filters often and get a high-quality air cleaner. 
  • Keep your dog out of certain rooms which will be allergy free zones. 
  • Groom your dog regularly and follow proper instructions for their coat. Use the proper brushes. 
  • Consider medication for your allergies.
