Making Your Dog Comfortable in the Car

Although some dogs enjoy riding in a car, many dogs become uncomfortable or scared during a ride. Some dogs might get sick and others might whine while riding in a car. We all want our pups to be happy and healthy, so here are a few tips to keep your dog comfortable during a car ride.

Visit the Vet

If your dog gets car sick or anxious during car rides, your vet might be able to help. Your veterinarian can prescribe medicine to help with motion sickness or anxiety for those long car rides. They will also be able to tell you whether your dog is healthy enough for a trip. A vet will also be able to provide vaccination records in case you need them for a hotel or stay somewhere.

Safety is Key

Your dog certainly does not enjoy getting tossed around in the backseat of a car and it is even illegal in some states. You should invest in a doggy seatbelt or a car seat of some sort when planning a road trip. Try and make it as comfortable as possible for your dog by adding blankets, pillows, or anything else they enjoy.

Prep & Pack

Prepare enough food and treats for your dog that will last the duration of the trip. It is important to keep familiar food for your dog during an unfamiliar trip for a sense of normalcy. Depending on the length of your car ride, you might also consider bringing a doggy water bottle filled with clean water for them to drink. If you plan to make pit stops during your trip, consider packing a collar and leash, waste bags, and anything else you could need.

No Distracted Driving

Although you should keep an eye on your dog, you also need to be attentive to the road while driving. You should also consider the heat and air, the windows, and possible exercise for your dog.
