Hawaii “Pet Passport” Guidelines

Did you know that Hawaii is the only state that doesn’t have rabies? Rabies can affect a lot of the wildlife on the islands, so the government takes extra steps to protect it. Every mainland animal is required to have its own “pet passport.” This way, you can help keep Maui beautiful forever.

What is a “Pet Passport”?

A pet passport is very similar to your passport in that it tells authorities important information. In your dog’s case, a pet passport contains vaccination, treatment, and other health information to prove that your dog meets all the local requirements for travel. It might sound like a lot, but it’s essential for the wellbeing of Hawaii’s wildlife.

Requirements for the Pet Passport

Microchip

You should complete this step first since the rest of the items on this list will be attached to your chip number. Make sure that your dog gets an updated ISO 11784 chip as you prepare to travel. This chip is specific to your dog and will act as a confirmation number for their vaccination and health record. Not only that, but it keeps your dog safe and easily returnable if they get lost on the beaches of Oahu.

Vaccination

The only vaccine legally required for your dog to enter the state is a rabies vaccine. However, you should aim to keep your pet’s vaccines up-to-date to prevent sickness. Get the vaccine at least 30 days before your trip. Your pet passport should include the original copies of their last two vaccinations certificates.

Rabies Test

As an extra precaution, all pets must have proof of a rabies test no less than 120 days before entering the state. This tests the effectiveness of your dog’s vaccination against rabies and ensures that it’s entirely safe for them to come to Hawaii. Your pet passport must have a certificate showing the results of the test.

Flea & Tick Treatments

Like the rabies test, your dog must undergo flea & tick treatment within 14 days of travel. There is a long list of acceptable tick treatments, so consult your vet for information on the best one for your dog. Include a certificate with the test results in your pet passport for consulate viewing.

Import Permit and Health Certificate

This comes in two steps: first, you must fill out – and notarize – a Dog and Cat Import Form. This form acts as an application for the required quarantine once you land. You must attach an original Health Certificate for Hawaii, which should be issued by your vet within14 days of your arrival in the states.

Once you’ve put together your pet passport, mail it to the Animal Quarantine Branch of Hawaii for processing. It takes approximately 14 days to fully process the paperwork, so use overnight shipping when you ship it to the branch. It’s a long process, but it will all be worth it when you’re sipping Mai Tais with your best friend on the beaches of Hawaii!
