Hawaiian Flea & Tick Season

Hawaiian Flea & Tick Season

Even though it may be the winter holiday season, the weather in Hawaii is still warm and beautiful. The only issue with this is that flea and tick season never ends. Fleas and ticks can cause your pooch an overwhelming amount of irritation. So as responsible dog owners, it’s our job to be proactive about this issue and adequately treat our pups to circumvent any infestations that can move through dogs coat very quickly.

Why Flea & Tick Control is So Important

These parasites don’t stop at causing Pono to itch uncontrollably. they also can carry and transmit Lyme disease, bacterial infections, and malaria-like diseases. The irritation they cause our furry friend can cause them to scratch until they break their skin and even develop open sores leading quickly to an infection. Fleas and ticks also can consume a significant amount of your dog’s blood, which can cause anemia or other complications that can put Lani’s health at risk.

Flea & Tick Preventative Measures

In a warm climate like Hawaii, the best option for our furry friend is a year-round preventative medication. There are many options available for our canine companion from over-the-counter to vet prescribed formulas. Topical treatments are the most popular among dog owners, but if you aren’t sure where to begin, talking to your pup’s vet is a great place to start.

On top of medication, here are some tips that can help prevent your pup’s exposure to fleas & ticks:

  • When possible, keep your pooch inside
  • Don’t let your four-legged friend go wandering the hiking trail out into tall grass or wooded areas
  • Keep your lawn mowed
  • Remove any dead leaves, palm frons, pine needles, or grass clippings from your yard
  • Inspect your pooch for fleas or ticks frequently, especially after being outside
  • Use a flea comb on your pup
  • Wash your canine’s bed about once a week.

Flea & Tick Treatment for Dogs

Even when you try your best, your playful pup could still become invested with fleas and ticks. If this occurs, you’ll want to treat all of the animals living in your home.

Different Treatments to Consider:

  • Oral medications
  • Shampoos, sprays, and powder treatments
  • Thorough house cleaning (in severe cases this may require evacuation to allow for a spray or fog)
  • If you’ve determined these annoying pests came from your property be sure to treat your lawn as well

Taking Pono or Lani to the vet is the best place to start to ensure you’re providing your pooch with the best preventative measures against fleas and ticks. If your pup gets infested, taking them to the vet is also highly recommended to ensure your furry friend didn’t contract any illnesses from these critters, as well as to get them back on a healthy path as soon as possible.
