FAQs

Get answers to some of our most commonly asked questions:

Dog training methods can feel confusing because the industry uses a lot of buzzwords like force-free, fear-free, or positive reinforcement only. The truth is, training is not one-size-fits-all, and our philosophy is closer to the LIMA standard (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive).

We use a balanced, reward-focused approach that is fair, humane, and tailored to each dog — not a one-size-fits-all method.

The dog training world is full of buzzwords — you may hear terms like force-free, fear-free, positive reinforcement, or balanced training. Those labels can be confusing, because each trainer seems to define them differently.

Here’s what it means in plain English: we believe in using the least force necessary and the most reward possible to teach your dog. Our philosophy is similar to the LIMA standard (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive), which simply means we always look for the most effective, fair, and humane way to train.

We’re also tool-agnostic — that means we don’t believe in a “one tool fits all” approach. Instead, we work with the training tools you’re comfortable with, and we use them as a bridge of communication between you and your dog.

What we don’t do is old-school, compulsion-based training where dogs are forced into behaviors through fear or punishment. Instead, we rely on proven learning theory — classical conditioning (associating new cues with things dogs already understand) and operant conditioning (rewarding good choices to make them more consistent over time).

In simple terms:

  • Dogs get a “paycheck” (praise, food, or toys) for doing the right thing.

  • We teach in a way that makes sense to both dogs and their owners.

  • The end result is a happy, confident dog that listens reliably without fear.

Yes. Every Sit Means Sit trainer goes through a rigorous dog training certification process before ever working with clients. At our locations, we also have an internal certification system to ensure consistency, quality, and accountability across all of our programs.

Our head trainer holds multiple professional dog training certifications in different styles of training and continues to pursue additional certifications every year.

It’s important to know that, much like the fitness industry, there is no single governing body for dog training certification. Some programs carry little weight, while others represent real expertise. What truly sets us apart is the combination of certified education and hands-on experience:

  • We not only study and continue learning from multiple training disciplines…

  • We apply those skills daily by training hundreds of dogs each year — any age, any breed, any problem.

That balance of continued education and real-world application means our clients benefit from proven methods delivered by certified, experienced dog trainers — not just theory on paper, but training that works in everyday life.

Yes — and more importantly, we’ll teach you how to guide your dog so that the training lasts at home, not just with us. We’ve successfully worked with dogs of every age, breed, and background — from energetic puppies to older rescues with difficult pasts, from high-drive working breeds to family pets who just need better manners.

There are a few timeless truths we share with every client:

  • Dogs are wired for leadership. When leadership is unclear, dogs often fill the role themselves, leading to frustration, reactivity, or unwanted behaviors.

  • Dogs thrive with structure, rules, and boundaries. It doesn’t mean turning your home into “boot camp.” A handful of simple, consistent rules can make a world of difference in helping your dog feel secure.

We also believe that training should never feel like we’re imposing our way of living onto you. Instead, we come alongside you as a guide, helping you accomplish your goals with your dog so you can enjoy a happier relationship and more freedom together.

In some cases, especially with more extreme behaviors, a little more structure may be necessary at first. But we firmly believe that there is nothing more unfair than the equal treatment of unequals — every dog is a unique individual, and the rules in your home should reflect the needs of your dog.

The result is a training program that is not only effective but also tailored: you get a confident, well-mannered dog, and your dog gets the leadership, structure, and support they need to thrive.

We’ve built our programs so there’s an option for nearly every family, every dog, and every budget — from introductory group classes to our most comprehensive private training experiences.

  • Introductory Programs (starting around $300–$600):
Great for puppies and families who want to dip their toe in. These are short group classes or weekend workshops that provide a foundation in obedience and structure. Perfect for learning the basics, but not intended to deliver full transformation.

  • Core Transformational Programs ($1,600–$6,000):
Our most popular options. These include structured one-on-one training packages and Board & Train programs designed to address everything from basic obedience to serious behavior challenges. This is where most families land because these programs deliver lasting, life-changing results.

  • Aspirational & Concierge Programs ($7,500–$10,000+):
For families who want the absolute best. These packages may include service-dog or therapy-dog level training, a concierge “private trainer” experience in your home, or lifetime support with unlimited tune-ups, socials, and priority boarding.

We also offer flexible payment plans to make training more accessible. No matter where you begin, training is more than a cost — it’s an investment in a happier dog, a calmer home, and the freedom to enjoy life together.

Daniel & Jessica Strong
Daniel & Jessica StrongOwners
At Sit Means Sit, we’re not just dog trainers-we’re problem solvers. Our mission? Helping dogs and their owners create a life with more freedom, less frustration, and lasting results.
Who We Are
We’re Daniel and Jessica Strong married for over 14 years, parents to six incredible kids, and owners of four amazing dogs. We’ve worked together in the SMS world for the past five years, and in August 2024, we took full ownership of Sit Means Sit Elkton and Wilmington.
Daniel grew up with dogs-training, playing, and understanding them from an early age. Jessica? Not so much. That contrast gives us a unique perspective: we understand both the struggles and successes of dog ownership, whether you’re an experienced handler or bringing home your first pup.
Our Family & Pack
Life in our home is full of energy, adventure, and, of course, training. Our four dogs aren’t just part of the family-they’re part of our mission. They help demonstrate training techniques, show what’s possible with the right guidance, and remind us daily why we do what we do.
Why We Do This
We get it-owning a dog should be enjoyable, not stressful. Struggling with leash pulling? Jumping? Reactivity? We’ve seen it all, and we know how to fix it. Our goal is to simplify training, build confidence, and give you the tools you need to succeed-whether that means walking your dog without frustration or bringing them into any environment with total control.
At Sit Means Sit, you’re not just signing up for dog training-you’re joining a community. Let’s get to work!

We love customers and their dogs. They love us.

Literally can’t say enough about how wonderful this place is! I’ve never met a more dedicated company, even outside of dog trainers. The SMS family is willing to do whatever it takes to get their clients a balanced dog. They don’t just take your dog, train them, hand your dog back, and walk away. SMS…

We took our two pitbulls to Sit Means Sit for training. Sit Means Sit did a wonderful job training our dogs. Kileaux was always easily distracted and Nikita was a rambunctious puppy. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful in teaching us how to work with our dogs on continued training. It is hard to…

I am so pleased and impressed with Sit Means Sit in general. My Aussie puppy did a three week board-and-train since my work schedule limited my ability to go to group classes. They were very understanding and did an excellent job of explaining every aspect of their training methods, their e-collar, and were very open…

The Sit Means Sit program enabled me to take my two dogs Gaea and Dayzee on mountain hikes without worrying about them chasing wildlife. It’s great to hike with my dogs and not worry about spooking the wildlife, thank you!
