Tips for Snowy Winter Dog Walks

As temperatures fall this winter it is important to take some extra steps when going on your daily walks. Read below to learn tips for going on winter walks with your furry friend!

Time

First, you should take your walks at an appropriate time of the day. So, you should plan around the weather and windchill. Often taking walks in the middle of the day will be the warmest for you and your pup. Also, keep your walks under 30 minutes at a time. However, some dogs may be able to handle longer walks in the cold. So, pay attention to your companion’s cues to determine if they have had enough. Some signs that your pal is too cold include licking paws, picking up paws, whining, or shivering. Lastly, it is best to stick to sidewalks. This will prevent your pal from trekking through deep snow and keep the cold snow off of their belly.

Attire

If your pal has a short coat or is more likely to get cold more quickly, you should consider getting your companion a coat. Also, if your pal is comfortable in them, boots are a great way to protect your four-legged friend’s feet. Booties will help to keep your pal’s paws warm, keep salt and chemicals off their feet, and protect paws from rough terrain. Just as you dress warmer for the colder months, your pal should too!

Other Precautions

Keeping your pal’s paws trimmed will help snow and ice from accumulating between their toes. Additionally, you should wipe your furry friend’s paws after walks to remove salt or other chemicals your pal may have picked up off the road. You should also use reflective clothing or collars to be more visible when there is less sunlight.
