How to Puppy Proof Your Home

Bringing a new puppy home is very exciting, especially for first time pet owners. We all know that raising a dog isn’t always just cuddles and fun. It’s a huge responsibility and its important to make sure your house is fully puppy proofed before welcoming the newest furry addition to your family. We came up with some pointers for each of the rooms in your house. Ensure your pups safety and keep all of your belongings in one piece!

Living Room

This is where dogs typically find their favorite items from pillows, cushions, shoes, cords, decorations and more. Puppies are curious; they will try and get their paws on everything until they are properly trained. Always keep this room cleaned up and put everything away. To keep your decorative throw pillows from getting chewed on we advise pet owners to purchase baskets to store them in while the pup is around. Your pup will begin teething soon and power cords always seem to attract them. Cover up extension cords and keep all wires hidden.

Kitchen

Yum, smell that? Well chances are so does your dog. Scents can entice your pet easily and make them want to hunt down whatever it is until it’s found. Kitchens include a lot of nooks and crannies, which may have toxic chemicals or dangerous foods that your dog would love to dig into. Child locks work just as well for pups. Attach these in places where you think they can reach.

Bedroom

Its natural for your dog to be lured to your bedroom because it smells just like you! Keep it clean and pick up all hangers, shoes, jewelry, blankets, and laundry. Some dogs will try to make their own little nesting area under your bed. Make sure you put storage or any kind of blockage under it to keep them from hiding away. Keep your closet closed and bathroom closed if you have one.

Bathroom

Bathrooms tend to be the most hazardous place for dogs. We store cleaning supplies, razors, soap, toilet paper, and more things that could be dangerous if your pup if ingested. Keep everything put away in cabinets, drawers and put child locks on them as well. Keep your toilet seat down and purchase a trashcan with a locked lid.

Outside

The garage is filled with toxic products and chemicals that you want nowhere near your pet. We suggest that you keep your garage or shed locked up. Place everything up high on shelves and in storage. Most people wouldn’t realize all of the dangers that are in their own backyard. Certain plants have toxins in them that will make them extremely sick. Make sure you talk to your veterinarian about your garden before you let them out to play.

Sound like a lot to handle? Don’t be overwhelmed. As your pup gets older you won’t have to worry about these hazards so often. Once they have their basic obedience skills down it will be easier to manage.
