How to Keep Your Pup Safe During a Hurricane

Hurricane season is just around the corner for Southwest Florida. We want to make sure all of our loving pet owners are taking the proper precautions for their four-legged family members. Hurricanes are just as startling to your pets as they are to you. It’s important to make sure they feel secure and comfortable during these times of high anxiety. Check out our tips below on how to keep your pup safe during a hurricane.

Stick to the Plan

Evacuation:

In case you are told to evacuate, make sure you have somewhere to go that is pet friendly. It may surprise you, but not all emergency shelters allow pets. Ask friends and family members that live in a safer area if you can reside there. Usually workplaces, community buildings, and churches will offer safe havens during this time as well. Certain animal shelters and veterinarian offices offer emergency boarding for dogs during dangerous times. Write down a list of places that welcome your pet incase you have to stay outside the area. Hurricanes don’t necessarily come at scheduled times. You might be out of the house when a disaster hits so it’s important that you make arrangements for your pets at home. Give someone you can trust an emergency key to come and save your dogs from being alone.

Make sure your dog has updated information on their I.D. tags and micro-chipped if possible.

Staying Home:

If you are told not to leave your house during a hurricane make sure you go to the safest area of your home and stick together. Put together a safe room with all the supplies you need for yourself and your pet.

  • Dogs need to be inside no matter what.
  • Keep dogs on a leash or in their kennel. You never know when you might have to evacuate. This will keep you prepared.
  • Remove all toxic chemicals and dangerous items from this room.
  • Cover all openings around the house including doggie doors, fireplaces, and vents.
  • Keep the radio on.
  • Create a quiet, comfortable place in the room for your pup.

Disaster Kit:

Put together an emergency disaster kit for your dog.

  • Enough food and water for at least five days
  • Medications and vaccination records
  • Toys and doggie bed
  • Pet first-aid kit
  • Garbage bags
  • Leashes, harnesses, and carriers
  • Photos of your dog incase lost
  • Vetnarian number
  • Newspapers
  • Paper towels
  • Grooming items
