Protect Your Dog from Overheating

Summer can mean fun outdoor activities for our dogs and us. From walks in the park to playing on beaches, there is so much to do. Summer can also be a dangerous time for dogs. With high temperatures, it can be really easy for dogs to overheat and it can be deadly. Here are some ways to protect your dog from overheating.

Early Signs

Here are a few early signs of overheating:

  • Heavy panting
  • Dry or pale gums
  • Increased drooling
  • Deep and rapid breathing

Prevention

Prevent these early signs by doing the following:

  • Don’t overexert your dog on walks or during playtime
  • Find a shady spot for your dog to rest
  • Have lots of drinking water ready
  • Place clothes soaked in cold water on your dog’s paws, head, and neck if they appear to be overheating

Other Tips

  • Don’t assume just because your dog is in water that they can’t over heat. Always keep an eye on them.
  • NEVER leave your dog in the car. Even if it is only 80 degrees outside, it can get up to 100 degrees inside the car.
  • Go to animal hospital quickly if you ever think your dog is overheating. Better safe than sorry.

Summer is the time to spend lots of quality time playing with your dog and having fun! Just make sure you’re always safe and aware of the signs!
