Tips for Introducing Your Dog to Children
Having a dog in your home can be extremely rewarding for you and your children. It can teach your children responsibility, compassion, and love for animals! However, there are steps you must take to protect your children and your pup. Some children do not understand at first that dogs are not toys, which can lead to them getting bitten or scaring your dog. Here are some tips to introducing your dog into your family!
Always Supervise
You should never assume you could leave your child alone with your dog. This is especially true if your child is very young, but in general you should be there to intervene. If you can’t supervise, put your dog in safe, secure place where they are comfortable while your child in the room.
Dogs are Not Toys
Teach your children early on that dogs are living creatures, not toys. They shouldn’t ride, sit on, or pull on your dog. You should make sure your children are gentle and caring towards your pup.
Approaching Other Dogs
This is another important aspect of teaching your children about dogs. Your dog may be very comfortable with your kids, but other dogs may not. Teach your kids to ask the owner of other dogs if they can pet their dog before they approach. You can also teach them how to let a dog sniff their fist to see if the dog wants to interact.
Growling
Learn how to read your dog’s body language, including growling. Do not punish growling, since that is a way dogs show they are uncomfortable. Explain to your child that the dog does not like whatever they’re doing.
Overall, having a dog can be extremely beneficial for your children and can be a great playmate for your dog. Just be sure to always be aware and careful!
