Trainer Tips: Preparing for the 4th of July

Fireworks, cheering, loud music, and fun. These are a few things that come to mind when preparing for next month’s festivities.

But what we don’t always think about are the dogs and other furry friends that get lost around this time of year. That’s why we’re here to give you some helpful tips and guidelines for keeping your pup safe!

Start Training ASAP

Even the most well-behaved pup can run off after being spooked by the sound of fireworks, especially if it’s something they’ve never heard before. We want to treat firework sounds like we would any other distractions. If your pup is already working around heavier distractions, you have all the tools you need! Start by playing firework sounds at a low volume during your pup’s training sessions. These are easy to find on YouTube and Spotify with the search terms, “firework sounds” or “fireworks for dogs.” As you get success during your sessions, gradually increase the volume. This way, we are introducing your pup to the sounds before the day of, desensitizing them to the sounds of real-life fireworks.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise!

Starting early in the day, exercise your pup to get them nice and tuckered out before the night of fireworks. This can be playing ball, going for a morning run, playing with friends at the park, whatever works best for you. If you can fit in some extra training sessions, that will help relieve some of their extra mental energy as well. A tired pup is more likely to stick to their safe spot and maybe even take a nap while you enjoy the 4th of July festivities outside.

Create a Safe Space

Finding a space where your dog can feel safe plays a key part in preparing for the fireworks and festivities. When choosing a spot for their kennel, make sure to pick an interior room with doors or other barriers to the outside. We want your pup to be secure in case they get out of their kennel. You can add some extra comfort and security for your pup by playing white noise or putting a blanket over their kennel. Dogs learn in pictures, so having your pup relax in their kennel regularly can help relieve stress and prepare them for the day of. Some pups might enjoy a peanut butter kong or other treat while they are resting, just be aware of choking hazards or anything nearby that might get chewed up.

Double Check Identification

Most importantly, make sure they have a clear ID in case they get lost! More pets go missing on the Fourth of July than any other holiday. You can increase the likelihood of them finding their way back to you by making sure their tags and microchip have your current contact information, and taking some updated pictures of your pup.

Whatever you choose to do, start doing it now. The more repetitions, the better you will be prepared!
