Should You Microchip Your Dog?

As pet owners, we want to do everything we can in order to keep our furry friends safe. One way to do this is by microchipping our dog.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a radio-frequency identification transponder. It carries an identifying number that is unique to your dog and that gets embedded into the loose skin between your dog’s shoulder blades. It is roughly the size of a grain of rice and can be scanned by a vet or shelter in to identify your dog. It is not dangerous and is not more invasive than a vaccine injection.

Once your dog is microchipped, you will register it with a national pet recovery database and enter all of your contact information. Then, if the situation ever arrived where your dog gets lost or runs away, you can be contacted if your dog’s microchip is scanned.

Should I Microchip My Dog?

A microchip is an extra layer of security to ensure your dog’s safety and increase your chances of being reunited if they are ever lost. A different identifier, such as a collar, can easily break off and be lost leaving your dog with no other identifiers.

This all to say, a microchip is a safe and effective way to keep your pet safe and it is a good idea to have your pet microchipped as soon as possible.
