How Much Does Training Cost?

How Much Does Dog Training Cost?

How much will it cost to get my dog professionally trained? This is a common question for people that do not know what to ask. The best question to ask a dog trainer is what will I get and can this really solve my issue and give me results I want?  How does the dog learn? What motivated the dog to do work for you? Will the dog obey others like my kids with this training? How long does it take? How much time will I have to work on this to get the results I want?  But when people don’t know anything else this is often the only thing to ask if you don’t know about a product or service. When I started looking for dog training back in 2005, I had no idea what I wanted or what questions I should have, so I asked how much does it cost.

In my last ten years as a full-time professional dog trainer, I have seen people pay all kinds of money for dogs that were not trained.  Not training dog has cost multiple, broken bones from dogs pulling on the leash, many sprains, bruises, some stitches, as well as children hurt when a powerful excited lab pulled them down.  Some pullers hurt a persons hand because they wrap the leash around their wrist.  I have clients that before training have had surgery based on what a dog did.

Just like injuries, there are countless dollars spent on damage done by destruction.  There is no way to compile the complete list of all the things dogs have damaged or how much it cost.  Here are a few favorites:  ate holes through the Jeep seat, seatbelts in half, dug through the bottom of the crate, then flooring, then sub flooring, chewed through a rail road tie (yes they can!), iPhone, ruined a new paint job on a custom truck, dug through the space next to the front door (all the way through the trim, then through sheet rock, and to the outside siding.  One pack of German Shepherds actually clawed and ate through walls and the owner spent over $13,000 making the house like Chipotle with metal (tin lined) walls and metal gates in the home. Crazy? It’s true.

These above examples are all from people that then became clients.  So if they started first, they would have saved in some cases thousands of dollars by training!  Remember, not training is training your dog to do anything that it can get away with!
