Safely Dying Fur

As long as you use dog-safe products, dying fur is completely fine! If your dog has sensitive skin, ask your vet before you try and dye their fur. But, a good tip to follow is to only dye the tips of the fur and in areas your dog can’t easily lick to avoid potential irritation. Some other helpful information to follow is to:

  • Never use human hair dye, this dye is formulated for human use and not dogs. Human dye has pH levels that are fit for human hair, not pooch’s. Human dye also contains chemicals that are meant to lift the color of hair which can be too harsh for dogs and result in fur shedding, burns, or sores.
  • Go to a professional groomer. Some groomers may not know how or won’t dye fur, but many grooming salons will! Make sure you also know what kind of dye they are using in the process.
  • Avoid any sensitive areas on your dog. Pup’s eyes are especially sensitive so steer clear to avoid any damaging effects.
  • Avoid dye altogether if your pooch is prone to sensitive skin. Even a patch test could be worrisome so skip the dye.
