This list was created by calculating the density of dogs in the city by finding the number of dogs per square kilometer and you might be surprised by some of the cities on the list!
1. Paris
The city of love might actually mean the love of dogs as Paris takes the number one spot as the best city for dog lovers. Paris has the world’s highest dog density, with a whopping 2,857 dogs per square kilometer! Dogs are welcome on all forms of public transportation, in most restaurants, and even in the Palace of Versailles park, one of France’s most famous landmarks.
2. Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires has the second highest dog density in the world with 2,463 dogs per square kilometer in this vibrant city. This may be due to this city’s abundance of city parks, great weather all year round, and low cost of pet care services. All of this, coupled with the openness of the city’s locals, makes Buenos Aires a wonderful city to be a dog parent in.
3. Bern
This town in Switzerland takes the third place spot for dog-loving cities on this list with 1,236 dogs per square kilometer. While this city has the lowest amount of dogs of any city on this list, the density of the dogs in one area is what makes this town so special. This region is where the Bernese Mountain Dog originated, deriving its name from the town of Bern. The Bernese Mountain Dog works in the mountains herding cattle and pulling milk carts to local dairies.
4. Havana
The capital city of Cuba comes in at number 4 on the list with 1,194 dogs per square kilometer. However, this city comes in with the highest number of dogs overall as there are roughly 870,00 dogs in the city of Havana. Since the population of Havana is about 2.1 million, that means there is almost one dog for every 2.5 people, which is a ton of dogs!
5. Chicago
Number five on this list is none other than Chicago, Illinois! Chicago comes in with 1,037 dogs per square kilometer and a staggering 610,600 dogs in the entire city! However, with the city’s abundance of parks, dog-friendly bars and restaurants, and dog-friendly apartments, it’s no wonder that Chicago is a great place for pet owners and dog lovers to come together.
