Keep Your Dog Cool In The Summer Heat

Sit Means Sit Corpus Christi is dedicated to providing dog obedience classes, both individual and group for the dogs and owner of Corpus Christi. Summertime in Corpus Christi means months of brutal heat and humidity. Your canine friends need extra care during the months of heat. If your dog gets heat stroke they could become very seriously ill or even die. There are some basics steps to take to keep your dog cool, and healthy during the summer months.

  • If your dog stays outside for any length of time it needs to have shade to protect it from overheating. If your dog is directly in the sun for along time, its body temperature could rise and it could get heat stroke.
  • Plenty of water. If your dog has a habit of digging or tipping it’s water bowl, it will need several sources of water to help it stay cool.
  • Putting a kiddie pool out for your dog is a great way of helping him or her stay cool and gives them a water source that they can’t (easily) tip or dig all the water out of.
  • Choose your walk times carefully. Don’t walk your dog in the midday heat. Walking your dog in the early morning hours is the best option, with late in the evening being the second best option.
  • Pick your path carefully. Try to walk where there is shade.
  • Your dog’s feet are very sensitive and should be protected. You can buy your dog protective boots or be very careful about where you walk him or her. The sand at the beach can be very hot for you to walk on, so don’t let your dog walk on it when it is too hot for your own feet. Walking near the water where the sand is wet and cool.
  • Don’t leave your dog in the car. Ever. Not even with water and the windows down. Dogs naturally have higher body temperatures than humans, plus a fur coat. Leave them at home or have someone watch them near the door (preferably in the shade) of the store.
