Food to Help Your Dogs Upset Stomach

Foods to Help Your Dog’s Upset Stomach

You probably have some family recipes tucked away that you only pull out for when your loved one is sick. We all do. Food can be a good way to treat a variety of ailments for humans… and dogs! Though vets typically recommend you stray away from feeding your dog human food, there are some that can help settle your dog’s upset stomach.

Lean Protein

The first one on the list is lean protein. This includes white meat, like chicken and turkey, and lean ground beef. These meats are lower in fat content, so they aren’t as heavy on your pet’s stomach as regular red meats. They’re easy to digest, which makes them perfect for a tumultuous tummy.

Potatoes

If your dog is suffering more from diarrhea, then try serving them potatoes. Remember, potatoes contain solanine which is super toxic to dogs so make sure that you bake them before serving. We recommend that you bake them for 30 minutes at 450 degrees with no seasonings. If you do want to make it a little flavored, add a little salt. Avoid over-salting, as it dehydrates them.

Canned Pumpkin

Plain canned pumpkin is a great high-fiber food that can help regulate your dog’s digestion and quell their diarrhea. Serving it to them by the spoonful is best, but don’t over-serve. Overserving can make them constipated, as too much fiber can be bad. Also, make sure you only serve plain, unsweetened canned pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling. The filling has artificial sweeteners that can be toxic to your dog. Plain pumpkin puree can be found in the canned veggie aisle.

Prescription Dog Food

If there is a specific health issue you’d like to tackle, consult your vet for recommendations on prescription dog foods. Many brands offer health lines built specifically for gastrointestinal issues, so doing your research could point you in a great direction. Make sure that you consider all of your dog’s health problems, as it can help your narrow down your choices more.
