Summer Picnic Safety Tips For Your Dog

Everyone loves a good picnic or BBQ celebration. Our dogs are no exception to that rule. With the allure of running and playing outside and perhaps getting a tasty treat, dogs are all too eager to jump in the car and accompany us to these festivities. Before bringing your dog along with you, consider these few tips to keep your dog safe, healthy, and happy at your summer BBQ or picnic.

Keep Them Away From The Food Or Picnic Basket

Many picnic foods can be dangerous and upset a dog’s stomach. Common picnic foods to look out for are:

  • Grapes
  • Chocolate
  • Onions
  • Corn Cobs

Don’t Give Your Dog Left Over Bones

If fried chicken or ribs are part of the menu, it might be tempting to let your dog chew on the leftover bones. Chewing on bones is extremely dangerous, so don’t let your dog do it. Bones can splinter when chewed on, which can cut their mouth and get stuck in their throat and GI tract. Leftover gristle and fat on the bones can also cause diarrhea and vomiting.

Keep Your Dog Leashed

When at a park for a picnic or even a friend or relative’s house, new smells and sights might tempt your dog to run off to explore the new surroundings. With all the distractions around your dog, it might be difficult to recall him, even if he is well trained. Leashing him will make sure that he is safe and out of trouble. As an extra safety step, make sure his ID tags are up to date if he does happen to run off.

Check To Make Sure Your Dog Is Welcome

Most parks have rules regarding pets. Some have restricted areas, and most require your dog to be on a leash at all times. Calling or checking the park’s website ahead of time is a great idea to make sure that you and your pup follow the rules.

If you’re attending a picnic or BBQ hosted by someone other than you, don’t just assume your dog is welcome because the event is outside. Always check ahead of time with the party’s host to make sure it’s ok for your dog to attend.

Keep Your Dog Cool

Dog’s can get overheated in hot weather and suffer from heatstroke and dehydration. Offer plenty of cool water and some shade to take a rest from playing.

Bring Doggie Supplies With You

Be prepared with anything your dog may need during your outing.  A few things to consider packing for your dog’s adventure:

  • Water
  • Water bowl
  • Dog-friendly food or treats
  • Poop bags
  • Leash or a lead
  • Toys
  • Towels

Watch Out For The Hot Grill Or Campfire

Curious noses can get a dog into trouble. Make sure he doesn’t wander too close to the grill or a fire that could cause burns. Keep him on a leash when near these items to keep him safe.

Outings with your pup can be fun for you and your dog. Remembering these few safety tips can ensure that everyone has fun and stays healthy.
