Keeping Your Dog Busy While They’re Alone
As much as we would like to bring our pets with us everywhere we go, we often are unable to. Some dogs are able to get through the day alone, napping and enjoying themselves, but other dogs need a bit more stimulation or they’ll get into trouble. It is difficult to keep your dog occupied while you are not there, but we have some tips for you.
Before You Leave
Keeping your dog active before you leave is a good way to make them relaxed while you are gone. Whether playing a game of fetch or tug-of-war, tiring out your dog will help them sleep during the time that you are gone, which can make it go by much faster for your furry friend. If your dog does have separation anxiety, try some training to make the process go by more smoothly. Some common tips are to love on your dog before you leave and to try leaving in small increments to get your dog used to the idea of you being gone.
Keeping Your Dog Relaxed
There are many dogs that get anxious while their owners are away, also known as separation anxiety. When dogs have separation anxiety, some tend to act out for attention and some pups are just plain mischievous. No matter the situation, you can help your dog become more relaxed while you are gone by taking some simple steps.
Some dogs can really wreak havoc, so certain people feel comfortable with using a dog crate or gate to block off areas that you do not want your dog getting into while you are away. By using a gate or crate, you are ensuring your dog will not get into trouble, but it can be scary for some dogs. If your dog is contained in a gate, crate, or room, it might be comforting to set up a cozy area with toys, pillows, and other items your dog might like. When your dog is more comfortable, such as in a welcoming bed, they are less likely to act out, whine, or cry.
Some dogs are agitated by outside distractions such as squirrels, neighbors, or cars and this problem can become worse when we are not home to comfort our dogs. To combat these issues, you can close the curtains or blinds to prevent your dog from seeing potential outside triggers such as animals or people.
Some dogs might enjoy having a fan or noise machine on to comfort them, too. White noise or the sound of a fan can soothe many dogs and make them feel less alone. Sit Means Sit wants your dog to feel relaxed and safe!
Distracting Your Dog
Some dogs do not only need prevention but distractions, too. Toys can be a great distraction for dogs, especially ones that are durable, to keep your dog occupied for long periods of time. Is is important to ensure that the dog toy will not present a choking hazard, though, since you will not be supervising. Toys that can keep your pet mentally stimulated such as ones like lick mats, treat toys, or solo toys are especially helpful.
External distractions, such as turning a television or radio on, can entertain your dog and distract them from potential triggers. Things like doggy cameras, treat dispensers, or walky-talky features are other handy tools to utilize while away. By using these gadgets, you will be able to interact with your even when you can not physically be present.
If your dog continues to have bad behavior or anxiety while you are away, it might be worth trying a trainer to help your dog cope with you being gone. Some other ideas are to get a dog sitter or utilizing a doggy daycare if you have one near you.
