Preparing to Fly with Fido

Traveling with a pet can be extremely rewarding. It can also be extremely stressful and difficult. But Sit Means Sit wants you to enjoy your next trip so here is our guide to flying with Fido.

Choose a Carrier

The carrier you choose can have a huge determination on how your trip will go. You want to pick one that will be right for you and your pooch.

First, check the regulations for your airline so you can ensure that it will work once you get to the airport.  Next, search for something that will work for your dog’s height and weight. You want to pick something that they can move around in comfortably and aren’t crammed into. It should be big enough that you can fit in a little blanket or pillow for comfort.

It may be wise to choose one with mesh sides so that it has good ventilation and so that your dog can see what is going on around you.

Once you choose a carrier, spend some time making sure your dog feels safe and comfortable in it so that they don’t feel overly stressed on your travel day.

Find a Calming Treat

This can be a stressful event for your pup, so give them something to calm their nerves. This could be a favorite toy or blanket. You could even give them CBD or melatonin treats that will help them to feel even more relaxed.

Pack Vet Records

When you check-in, you will probably be asked to show proof of vaccines and a rabies certificate so be sure to pack those so you don’t run into any problems at the airport. They just want to be sure your pet is healthy before you get on the plane.

Find the Pet Relief Area

Most airports these days have a pet relief area where you can let Fido out of their carrier to do their business. Don’t forget to pack a poop bag as you will have to clean up after your pooch. Fido will also need to be leashed while in the puppy relief area.

In Flight

During the actual flight, you will probably not be allowed to let Fido out of their carrier. This means that before take-off you need to ensure that your pup is comfortable and calm. This might be a good time to give them a new toy.

As long as your dog won’t try to make a break for it, you can reach into the carrier throughout the fight to pet your pup and give them some reassurance.
