Reactive Dog Training in Maryland

It doesn’t take much to set a reactive dog off. It could be that they get excited or scared, or even that they’re in an environment or situation they’ve never been in before. You don’t want your pup to get to that point. If you notice that your dog has trouble listening to commands or has started reacting to other dogs, don’t wait to bring them in. Sit Means Sit can help prevent your dog from becoming reactive or even aggressive.

Our certified professionals not only address issues early on, but they also take on aggressive dogs who are established in their behaviors. Our aggressive dog training uses advanced techniques and impressive skill sets to make your furry friend feel calm, comforted, and confident during their training sessions.

What Is Reactivity in Dogs?

Some dogs exhibit extreme responses to stimuli. A lot of times, these responses can look like aggressive behaviors, even if they’re fear-based. When dogs experience excitement and/or fear, they release a stress hormone called cortisol. This causes the dog’s heart rate to increase and if no or improper training has taken place, your dog might react with some of the following:

  • Barking
  • Biting
  • Growling
  • Lunging
  • Destructive behavior
  • Snapping
  • Potty accidents

Triggers of Dog Reactivity

Some triggers are easy to identify, others… not so much.

You may always notice the typical unwanted behavior such as your dog barking every time the mail carrier shows up at the door. Or, your dog may lack basic manners any time another dog exists in their vicinity. Identifying triggers is half the work, so don’t negate the importance of putting in the work at home. It may be daunting, but canine reactivity is not insurmountable!

The hardest part as an owner is maintaining control when a dog reacts to a trigger. Often, strong verbal or physical responses from dogs cause people (owners included) to become nervous, which aggravates the situation.

If you’re in this boat, reactivity training is exactly what you and your dog need. It helps with behavior modification to solve problems such as separation anxiety, fear, and aggression. Our trainers can help you learn how to quickly address the challenges you face, mitigate the risks associated with aggression and reactivity, and create peace of mind for you and your dog.

Our Reactivity Dog Training Program

At Sit Means Sit Dog Training, we recognize that dogs, just like people, are unique. Since no two dogs are exactly alike, no two situations will require exactly the same approach. Each dog trainer is professionally trained to listen to your concerns and work with you and your dog to identify and remove their unique triggers.

We offer a five-week course that covers several different methods meant to strengthen trust and communication between you and your dog. The idea is to give you both a common goal to work towards and that, in and of itself, builds a bond deeper than anything you’ve known before.

Attention-Based Training

We use different tools to teach your dog how to redirect their behaviors when triggers arise. We have a specialized Sit Means Sit remote training collar with low stimulation levels that help the dog stay focused and not get lost in the trigger.

Control Techniques

The first thing you should do is set boundaries and rules that are immovable. We recommend bringing special treats to training sessions to help build up good behaviors and secure desired patterns.

Socialization

Socialization is a huge part of your dog moving on from their aggressive past into a bright, friendly future. Even when you choose private lessons with one of our professional trainers, we still offer group classes to help your canine companions become a true, confident member of the family.

My husband and I adopted a young shelter dog, picked up as a stray. She is about a year and a half and had never lived in a home. Lily needed to learn manners, obedience and structure in order to live in peace and harmony. Sit Means Sit staff, Grace and Courtney, took charge and…

I was amazed with the results even after the very first class! Our pup is so much better than we expected after only 3 lessons. We look forward to continuing on with the group classes that are included to get the most out of the program, and see even more improvement with our pup! Shout…

Great experience at Sit Means Sit with our two bull terriers. They were patient with our stubborn bull-headed dogs. They lay a good framework and give you the tools but the owner must do most of the training at home. They do give good support and the graduate lessons are great to continue the work…

I have a Belgian Malinois which is an active, strong-willed breed. I am so thankful for the training at Sit Means Sit. My dog is doing amazing. She is like one of those TV dogs now. And it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to continue practicing with the group classes after the private sessions. She…
