History

The Basenji breed is one of the oldest dog breed, originating from Central Africa in regions that we acknowledge today as the Congo. Originally, the breed was used for hunting as their natural strengths made them an ideal pooch for the job!

Basenjis also have deep routes in ancient Egyptian culture. Depictions of the breed have been seen in hieroglyphics and other artwork from the period tying this breed to a rich history of being man’s best friend.

In the late 19th century the breed arrived in Europe and about a century later the first Basenjis were bred in the United States. However, this breed has been relatively unpopular in the U.S. despite their lovely personalties and wit.

Care

Feeding Basenjis is simple, but should be done with care. This breed is an active one, so they higher-quality their food is, the better. Typically, adult Basenjis do well with two meals a day with appropriate portion sizes depending on their age and activity level.

  1. Hip Dysplasia: A rather common health issue in many breed, hip dysplasia can cause limping, stiffness, and trouble moving. This is a less common issue for Basenjis however it is not totally unheard of.
  2. Bloating: Due to Basenjis’ large chests, bloating is rather common. To prevent this issue if your pup offer their food in slow feeder bowls and avoid elevated feeding bowls.
  3. Hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism refers to an issue with the thyroid glad. When it does not produce enough hormones it can lead to a variety of issues for your Basenji including weight gain, lethargy, and skin problems.
  4. Fanconi Syndrome: If your Basenji pup inherits Fanconi Syndrome they could struggle with kidney function. An early diagnosis and treatment can help your dog’s condition, however, they may struggle with excessive thirst, urination, or even kidney failure.
