Austin Dog Training: Rat Terrier Just Wants to Relax and Be Everyones Friend!

Client’s Name: Emmaleeblack and white rat terrier dog sitting on red blanket with bone

Dog’s Name: “Cooper aka Coopy”

City: Austin, TX

Breed: Rat Terrier

Likes: “Cooper likes to be  as close to his owners as possible – he is definitely a companion dog! Cooper also loves hanging out with his best friend Bella, our rescue pit bull.  They are extremely attached to each other and go everywhere together.  ”

Pet-Peeves: “Cooper HATES taking a bath – it stresses him out very badly.  He also hates when strangers come in the house and ‘invade’ his territory.  Cooper also hates other dogs he does not know, especially big dogs.  He is afraid of them and shows a lot of aggression toward them to try to scare them from coming near him.”

Favorite Toy: “Cooper has a stuffed squirrel toy that he loves to ‘de-flea’.  We catch him nibbling on the fur and it is the funniest thing because he chatters his teeth when he does it.”

Favorite Treat: Cooper LOVES chicken jerky and cheese!  He also loves Cheeto Balls and Fritos but only gets a few on special holidays.

Favorite Walk: Cooper loves to go to the dog park in our subdivision so he can be off leash and run as long as no other dogs are around.  He looks like a jack rabbit when he runs and you can tell he is so happy running.

Best Trick: “Cooper loves performing tricks for treats and his favorite trick is roll over.  He is also very good at giving high fives!”

Arrival Story: “Cooper was given to my in-laws by a breeder since he was the runt and no one was interested in buying him.  They kept him for a few months and gave him to me.  We had a Rat Terrier when I was a child but it ran away and I have always remembered what high spirited, fun, and great companions Rat Terriers are.”

Why Training / Sit Means Sit: “”Cooper is very fearful and this causes him to be aggressive towards strangers and other dogs.  It is hard to take him for walks or have guests over because his behavior is so rude and unacceptable.  He also is very high anxiety and I am hoping proper training will help him settle down and enjoy life more.  I have tried three other types of training with Cooper and all were unsuccessful.  My friend, Ashley Dean, raved about what a great job Sit Means Sit did with her labs so I thought I would give it a try to see if they could help Cooper.”

Motto: “We say Cooper is on RED ALERT all the time because he is constantly scoping out the premises, listening for any odd sounds, sniffing the air, and patrolling his environment.  He is a very anxious dog and his RED ALERT behavior sort of feeds his anxiety – he is rarely able to actually relax and enjoy life.”
