How to Build Your Dog a Snow Maze

As kids we loved playing in the snow and making igloos; as it turns out, most dogs enjoy it too. Building a maze for your dog stimulates their brain and keeps them moving. Many breeds need both mental and physical exercise on a daily basis to keep them happy and healthy. A snow maze is a great way for any dog to utilize both!

It’s easy for a dog to get bored in the winter when they have less time outside, and they can even start to get destructive. You may begin to see chewed up furniture or accidents in the house. If you don’t take your dog for as many walks when it’s colder, a snow maze is a great tool.

You can start out simple, so your dog isn’t completely lost. Shovel a path and build up walls to make a few routes. As the days go on, add more routes, close old ones, and see how your dog does with each added complexity. Make winding paths, add archways and tunnels, and even leave a favorite toy for him to find along the way. If your dog seems to lack incentive, try leading him around a little or just following him, so he knows he isn’t alone. Once your dog gets the hang of it, he might be begging you to go outside and try the maze again and again!

When putting your dog outside in the snow, keep in mind his size and fur. Small dogs and those with light fur need to have a sweater or coat put on them to keep them warm in the wet cold; you can even consider snow boots if you think your dog’s paws are getting too cold. Unless your dog was bred for the snow, limit their outdoor activities in freezing temperatures and always monitor him to make sure he isn’t getting too cold. When letting your dog inside, dry him off to help him warm up faster and give him a blanket to curl up on top of or under. See what mazes other pet parents are making and let your dog adventure!
