Pet Restrictions To Be Aware Of

It’s important to be aware that many city transportations are only open to smaller pooches. While it is unfortunate if you have a bigger furry friend, but, it’s great to know before planning to go somewhere. But, be sure to check with the specific service first to be sure in case they do accept larger dogs!

Viking Fleet Ferry Service

  • Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island
  • Small dogs welcome indoors if in a travel carrier
  • Large dogs are allowed on the deck while leashed
  • Accident clean-ups are the responsibility of the dog owner

Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company

  • Connecticut and New York
  • Pets must stay on the upper deck, not in the cabins
  • Leashed or dogs in carriers are allowed to ride without extra fees

Cross Sound Ferry

  • Connecticut and New York
  • Dogs must stay off passenger seating
  • Dogs must be in approved carriers and leashed while riding in designated auto areas

Fishers Island Ferry

  • Connecticut and New York
  • Dogs must be leashed and supervised but can remain on deck or in auto

The CAT Ferry

  • Maine
  • Dogs may travel in their owner’s vehicle or onboard kennels
  • Owners can’t visit their furballs while in the onboard kennels and must provide food and water (the owner will be notified if their pooch displays distress)

NJ Transit 

  • New Jersey
  • Small dogs in carriers are allowed on trains and buses

MTA

  • New York City and surrounding areas
  • Dogs must be in carriers and placed in the owner’s lap/arms at all times

Burlington Transport 

  • Vermont
  • Small dogs are allowed while riding in carriers

Block Island Ferry

  • Rhode Island
  • (On high-speed ferry) Dogs may ride in the cabin if in a carrier or remain leashed and on the deck if not in a carrier
  • (On regular ferry) Dogs are allowed in the cabin if leashed or in a carrier
