Dogs That Don’t Shed

Dogs making you congested, itchy, or sniffly? Unfortunately, some dog-lovers are allergic to our four-legged friends, but luckily, this doesn’t have to prevent you from adopting a doggo of your own! Hypoallergenic dogs don’t shed as much, which means less hair and dander floating around your house to set off your allergies. While these dogs aren’t completely hypoallergenic, you’ll be shocked at the difference it makes to have a dog that doesn’t shed. Check out our list of some dog breeds that don’t shed!

Portuguese Water Dogs

You may recognize this rare breed as the same breed as one of the White House’s most recent residents – the Obama family’s dog, Bo!  These medium-sized dogs are excellent swimmers and shed very little. Plus, they’re well-behaved, intelligent, and easy to train. A Portuguese Water Dog makes for a great family pet.

Scottish Terriers

You’ve probably seen these iconic dogs strolling down the street at one point or another, but you may not have known that they shed very little. Though small, Scottish Terriers are compact and powerful. Those little legs pack a big punch! They are known as an independent, stubborn breed, but their devotion and loyalty makes them great pets.

Labradoodles

Not only does this dog breed have a fun name, but they’re also extremely cute, playful, and hypoallergenic! Labs are an active, good-natured breed. Combine that with the poodle’s good looks, and you get the Labradoodle. To ensure that your Labradoodle is as hypoallergenic as possible, ask the breeder if the parents were low-shedding and try to find a Labradoodle that has two Labradoodle parents.

Yorkshire Terriers

Yorkshire Terriers are teeny terriers with long coats. Small, charming, and hypoallergenic, you can’t go wrong with a Yorkshire Terrier as your loyal companion! Yorkshire Terriers also tend to be extremely versatile – they enjoy being a lap dog and going for a long walk in the park – you can’t go wrong! Plus, you won’t have too much dog hair to clean up.

Schnauzers

Schnauzers are yet another low-shedding dog that won’t make your dog allergies flare up. They make excellent watch dogs and are extremely smart, loyal companions. Like Scottish Terriers, they make up for their smaller size with their robust bodies and speed. Schnauzers get along with everyone – from babies, to grandparents, to everyone in between. You won’t regret adopting one of these adorable hypoallergenic dogs!

These are some of the more popular low-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs out there, but there are many more breeds to choose from! Check with the breeder if you’re ever concerned about an allergy or hair clean-up. Soon you’ll be able to enjoy the loving companionship of a dog without the sneezes!
