How to Safely Take Your Dog Trick-Or-Treating

It’s October, so it’s almost time to Trick or Treat! While you might want to take your pooch trick-or-treating, there are a couple of things you need to keep in mind before the big day.

Leash Training

Make sure your dog is successfully leash-trained. Trick-or-treating is full of different people, which makes some skittish dogs try to bolt.  Leash training prevents your pooch from running away. If your dog is not leash training yet, maybe sit Halloween out this year. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Pick out a Costume

Costumes can be a cute way to celebrate Halloween. But costumes can be dangerous. Before you pick out Fido’s costume, make sure it fits properly and doesn’t obstruct Fido’s vision. Fido needs to be able to sit, walk, and run comfortably in his costume. You need to also ensure the costume isn’t too big or too small.

Keep Fido Away From Cady

Chocolate and other candy is extremely deadly for our furry friends. Keep these sweets away from your pooch throughout the night. Remind any small children not to give your pooch any candy, as it can get them sick. If you want Fido to have his own sweet treat, bring him his own yummy dog treats.

Monitor your pup’s mood.

While Halloween can be fun, it can also stress our pups out. When dogs get anxious or scared, they’re more likely to bite or do other destructive behaviors. When trick or treating with our pooch, ensure your dog isn’t showing any signs of anxiety, such as panting, shaking, or whining. If your dog seems scared, remove them from the situation.

While Halloween can be fun, it can also be dangerous for our pooches. If you’re bringing your furry friend trick-or-treating this year, make sure to follow our safety tips. Happy Halloween from Sit Means Sit!
