Other Dogs

If you have other dogs, you’ll want to watch to see how your perspective pup interacts with other dogs at the shelter. If they don’t get along with dogs there, they probably won’t at your home either.

If you live in a smart apartment, you should see how big your puppy is going to grow. You don’t want to bring him home and then realize one day he won’t really fit in your place anymore.

Money

Dogs can be expensive. Between veterinarian bills, trainers, food, and the many other accessories you may need to get for your dog, you can spend between $600- $900 each year on your pup. Plan a budget to see if you can truly afford adding this new friend in your life.

There are two main choices for places to find your puppy:

  • Shelters: Observe the puppies in the shelter to see how they interact with others and pay attention to body language. If they aggressive and at the front, that could mean they are more dominant. If you narrow down your choices, ask to take them on a short walk and also ask the employees about each dog’s personality and health.
  • Breeder: Ask your vet or local breed clubs for recommendations. Observe the puppies and see several so you can see which you are most compatible with. The breeder will tell you about the ancestry. Pay attention to facts about their parents and grandparents.

Keep all these things in mind and you should successfully find a new best friend for your home!
