What Is My Dog Trying to Say to Me?

Every dog owner thinks that their dog is talking to them. Whether it is a bark or a growl or a whine, we think we know our dogs communication to some extent. But how much do we actually know? Here are some common vocal sounds your dog makes and what they mean!

Happy Sounds

Moans and sighs are usually the most common sign of happiness, especially as puppies. A low-pitched moan usually means they are content with their environment and situation. As puppies, this type of moan means they are close to their littermates, their mother, or their owner. The ‘”sigh” usually happens when your dog is lying down with their eyes barely open. They are experiencing pleasure and content and let out a nice sigh of satisfaction. However, if their eyes are fully open, this can mean they are disappointed, especially if you’re not playing with them.

Varying Sounds

Whines and growls are not as obvious with their meaning. While we usually think of them as expressing stress or anger, whines and growls can also communicate happiness. If the whine rises in pitch at the end, this is communicating distress. If it drops in pitch or does not change at the end of their whine, this means happiness and excitement.

Growls are also slightly harder to define. They obviously can be used as warnings or threats, but can also be used to show they want to play. If they are medium-pitched, no teeth showing, and have no low rumbling, this is a sign of excitement and play.

Communication Among Dogs

Dogs are very good at understanding the differences between the play growl and the warning growl. While we don’t really know the difference as easily, dogs can understand very well what each means and react accordingly. In one study, researchers played both types of growls. When they played the warning growl, dogs avoided the bone. When the researchers played the playful growl, they went towards the bone and grabbed it.

While dogs are not always intentionally trying to sound upset or happy, they usually have something they are trying to say. The best we can do is try to learn more about their communication style so we can understand them the best we can! The more you know about your dog, the stronger your bond and relationship will be.
